50 brilliant independent bookshops in the UK

10 June 2016 6:02 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

We're celebrating 50 brilliant UK independent bookshops. If your favourite is missing, please add it to the list below...

In Neil Gaiman’s preface to Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores, he describes four bookshops from his childhood. One was a travelling school shop, one a local store staffed by a helpful hippy where he’d pick up 25p Tom Disch novels, another was a bus ride away and owned by a Grinch who’d glower at schoolchildren customers, and the last was a now-defunct Soho sci-fi and fantasy treasure trove. Four individual shops run by booksellers with distinct personalities and idiosyncratic tastes. All of which made Gaiman what he is.

That’s the joy of independent bookshops. Their personalities shape those of the people who visit them. They’re not homogenous. Their stock tends to reflect their passions rather than the year's best-performing unit-shifters. And their »

WWE Raw 04.04.16 Recap & Review – The Wyatt’s Turn Face, Nxt Talents Debut & Cesaro Returns

5 April 2016 1:56 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As Wrestlemania weekend came to a close, Monday Night Raw came packed with fresh faces, returning superstars, unexpected face turns and a main event for the ages.  It also had its fair share of disappointment that’s bound to cause a great deal of controversy.  All in all, a show worthy of discussion…

Vince Gives Shane Control Of The Show… For One Night Only

Wrestlemania 32 saw Shane O’Mac unsuccessfully take on Undertaker in a Hell In A Cell match.  If he won, he’d have inherited Monday Night Raw from The Authority; but, like most potentially good storylines in the current climate, it wasn’t to be.  That being said, we got a taste of what it would be like on this episode of Raw as Vince relinquished control for the night so he could prove a point; that point being that Shane’s authority would result in a train wreck of a show. »

Director Drew Hall on Redemption in his film convergence

11 February 2016 8:42 AM, PST | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

Dark Sky Films has brought us films as diverse and bold as The House Of The Devil, The Innkeepers, and Stake Land. Joining that esteemed company is the recently released (and now available on DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD) Convergence, in which a cop (Clayne Crawford, Swimfan, Jericho) finds himself trapped in limbo and must find redemption before he can escape. With support from veteran actors Ethan Embry (Vacancy, Once Upon A Time) and Mykelti Williamson (The Final Destination, Forrest Gump), the nightmarish action-horror film deals with weighty themes of religious fanaticism and atonement. We spoke with writer-director Drew Hall about his inspiration, beliefs, and symbolism.

Famous Monsters. Convergence is very timely since we’re in a period of religious extremism. Is that what prompted you to write the film?

Drew Hall. Yes. I grew up during a time period of very aggressive but non-violent anti-abortion protests. My family would take »

Supernatural season 11 episode 11 review: Into The Mystic

1 February 2016 12:57 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Compared to last week's extraordinary instalment, though good, Supernatural's latest episode is a more workmanlike affair...

After a cold open in Ireland featuring a shrieking, floating woman, a man bashing his own head in and a baby left to fend for itself, we find the boys investigating the case of a man brutally killed inside his own room with no signs of a break-in. Sam’s still reeling from his run-in with Lucifer so Dean tries to get him back on track, figuring that they’ve got nothing to work on the Darkness yet. Of course, they’re both blissfully unaware that Castiel is no longer in residence and Lucifer has taken over his meatsuit, intent on stopping the Darkness in his own, unique way. »
