Reese Witherspoon joins West Memphis Three movie, 'Devil's Knot'

18 December 2011 10:41 AM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Actress Reese Witherspoon has signed on to star in Atom Egoyan's "Devil's Knot," an upcoming film about the West Memphis Three. Witherspoon is set to play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of three 8-year-old boys who were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993, TheWrap reports.

The term "West Memphis Three" refers not to the boys who were killed, but to the three teenagers who were tried and convicted of the murders, Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin. During the trial, they were accused of killing the boys as part of a satanic ritual.

In 2007, DNA evidence from the crime scene that could not be attributed to the West Memphis Three or the boys was brought to light. The three men were released from prison after having served 18 years.

The film is based on journalist Mara Leveritt's book "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three. »

Daily Briefing. Film Comment Poll: Best of 2011

17 December 2011 8:17 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life tops Film Comment's list of the "Best Released Films of 2011," an annual year-end survey of film critics, editors, and past and present contributors — over 120 of them this year — so the magazine has put Kent Jones's beautiful essay from the July/August issue online (even if you don't admire the film as much as he does, you'll know that this is a must-read), and the Film Society of Lincoln Center is screening The Tree of Life through Tuesday.

The "Released" list goes as far as 50; the "Best Unreleased Movies of 2011" list runs to 52. At #1 is Jafar Panahi's This Is Not a Film; #2: Béla Tarr's The Turin Horse. There's been some grumbling among the tweeting set, by the way, that this list is too crowded with films that have scored distribution deals and will indeed be seeing a theatrical run sooner or later. »

Reese Witherspoon to Star in Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three Picture ‘The Devil’s Knot’

16 December 2011 11:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Months after we first heard of [2] Atom Egoyan's planned feature about the West Memphis Three, the project has found its first star. Reese Witherspoon has boarded The Devil's Knot, based on reporter Mara Leveritt's 2003 nonfiction book which chronicled the 1994 trials that put two teenagers in prison for life and another on death row for the murder of three eight-year-old boys, despite a lack of physical evidence. After years of appeals, the three men were finally freed this summer. More details after the jump. The true story of the West Memphis Three is among the most disturbing to come out of the American justice system in recent years. Though there was no concrete evidence connecting them to the case, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. were convicted partly because of their interest in the occult and heavy metal music; the prosecution argued that the murders were part of a Satanic ritual. »

Reese Witherspoon to Star in Atom Egoyan’s West Memphis Three Film

In addition to the three Paradise Lost films and Peter Jackson's own recently announced documentary, it looks like we'll be getting at least one more movie based on the real-life story of the West Memphis Three. Director Atom Egoyan (Chloe) has announced plans to create a fictional feature based on the book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, written by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt. It will chronicle the events that led to the wrongful conviction of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr. for the murder of three eight-year-old boys with little to no physical evidence supporting it. They were finally released from prison just a few months ago after serving over 18 years, which is one of the reasons why the story is becoming such a hot commodity in Hollywood. This week the project has landed its very first cast member in the form of Reese Witherspoon. »

Now Deadline says Reese Witherspoon is in talks to star. Reese Witherspoon ties up role in West Memphis 3 drama 'Devil's Knot'

15 December 2011 5:44 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Coming off lackluster middle-brow efforts like this year's "Water For Elephants" and the 2010 James L. Brooks mega-flop "How Do You Know", it's nice to hear that Reese Witherspoon has just attached herself to a smaller project that's being directed by Atom Egoyan - a filmmaker who, if not exactly at the peak of his career, continues to make interesting character-driven projects like last year's "Chloe" starring Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson and Amanda Seyfried. Of course I'm talking about the director's upcoming film "Devil's Knot", based on the infamous "West Memphis Three" triple-murder case that began receiving national attention when Joe »

Reese Witherspoon Ties the 'Devil's Knot'

15 December 2011 5:42 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Reese Witherspoon and director Atom Egoyan are teaming up to tell the story of the West Memphis Three.

Egoyan, the director of "Chloe" and "Where the Truth Lies," was announced as the director of "Devil's Knot," the film about the West Memphis Three, shortly after the murder defendants were found not guilty on Aug. 19. Now, "Devil's Knot" has claimed Witherspoon as its first cast member, according to Deadline.

"Devil's Knot" chronicles the 1993 murders of three children in West Memphis, Ak, with the three teenagers who were convicted of the crime coming to be called the West Memphis Three. The teens were incarcerated in 1994 and accused of being devil worshipers until they were found not guilty and released this past summer.

Reese Witherspoon will be playing Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the murder victims who initially believes the trio murdered her son but is eventually persuaded that the three suspects are innocent. »

Reese Witherspoon to Star in West Memphis 3 Story Devil’S Knot Directed by Atom Egoyan

15 December 2011 5:22 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director Atom Egoyan’s (Chloe) next project Devil’s Knot is based on the true events surrounding the 1993 murder of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, and the subsequent arrest of three teens suspected of committing the murders through satanic rituals. Taking its title from the Mara Leveritt book by the same name, Devil’s Knot will presumably take a dramatic look at the investigation of the case, both by the local police involved and by journalists like Leveritt who found the arrest and conviction of the West Memphis Three highly suspicious. While details on the film are short, Reese Witherspoon is reportedly attached to star as Pam Hobbs, a mother of one of the victims who is at first convinced of the teenagers’ guilt, but starts to question their conviction once the case drags on. 'Devil's Knott' Just Got Family Friendly. That's Kinda Lame.

While she once was an edgy upcoming starlette (Freeway, American Psycho, Fear and S.F.W.), Reese Witherspoon is now a family friendly actress that stars in movies like Four Christmases, Monsters vs Aliens, Vanity Fair and Legally Blonde. It's weird announcing her addition to Atom Egoyan's West Memphis Three drama Devil's Knott. It makes me nervous. The pic is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt's 2003 book "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three," which chronicled the prolonged murder trial of defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., who served 18 years in prison before being released in August.
