XL5 vs. Godzilla?
zsenorsock7 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very uneven episode with a lot of great moments in between a lot of nothing and a disappointing ending that it pretty much a repeat of the ending of "Space Immigrants".

When Space City loses contact with the crew of XL2 Steve and the crew of the XL5 (in the middle of Venus and Zoony doing the twist!) are ordered to the planet Monatay to find out what happened to them. When Steve and Venus fly Junior to the planet they discover the wreck of the XL2. What happened to them is a space monster that kind of looks like a brontosaurus with stegosaurus plates on its Tyranasaurus like head. The monster chases Steve and Venus into a cave where they find Al Stomper and Ken Johnson, the surviving crew of the XL2. When they don't respond to his radio signals, Professor Matt Matic lands the main ship to search for them but soon is also trapped in the cave. There's some good suspense when Steve tries to get out to Junior but falls and breaks his leg. The monster closes in but at the last moment pulls away when he hears the sound of other creatures of his kind...a sound that is actually being made by Zoony who has this power of perfect mimicry that has never been used or mentioned before. For Steve to be saved by Zoony is a huge disappointment.

Yet there are some good moments. There's some good suspense as we see Al and Ken trapped in what appears to be a collapsing cave with the monster outside; the wreck of the XL2 is pretty cool to see; I liked the scenes with Commander Zero and Lt. Ninety and the fact Matt is ready to disobey a direct order to save Steve and Venus. It's also kind of unusual to see a puppet with a broken leg.

Yet Steve Zodiac is the hero of this series. You don't want to see him saved (again) by the most annoying character in the show. Robert is virtually forgotten except as a comic foil for Zoony. I thought for sure he'd be involved in the rescue somehow. It's also never explained exactly how the monster caused the crash of the XL2 or what causes the radio transmissions to be interrupted. Also too many scenes of the crew being bored as they travel through space. That's boring in itself.

The monster of course it what it is. Although it is called a Space Monster, we never see it in space. It's just huge and has big teeth. You'd think the XL5 crew would have figured a way to defeat it.
