Romantic comedy-drama about two very different individuals coming together and forming a relationship. Sean is a would-be music artist who chances to meet a smart girl named Samara working in a clothing store; Samara has just gotten out of a lesbian relationship, and just went through an aborted suicide attempt. Sean, likewise, has just been through a divorce, though his bitchy ex isn't ready to admit its over. Despite the pain that Sean and Samara went through before, they find happiness and consolation with each other, though theirs ex's begin to threaten their relationship.
Shot on digital video by independent filmmaker Khari Ajene, who also acquits himself nicely in the role of Sean; his facial expressions in the sequence when he introduces Samara to his mother are priceless. Nikain is dynamite as Samara, and the supporting cast are all charming and well cast. Best of all is Ajene's intelligently written screenplay; his characters are honest with each other and even though the story is simple in the extreme, FATE emerges as a winner. Kudos also to Ajene's use of songs, which include tunes by Chanda Leigh, G Love and Ashley Bailey. *** / **** 87 min., 2004
