10 to Watch in 2010

31 December 2009 2:06 PM, PST | HollywoodLife | See recent HollywoodLife news »

You might not recognize these names – yet – but you will come 2010!

Check out HollywoodLife.com’s predictions for the actors and actresses who are going to make it big in the New Year!

1. Anna Kendrick

Although she appeared in one of the biggest grossing movies of the year, Twilight Saga: New Moon, it was her role as an ambitious and uptight corporate executive in George Clooney’s 2009 drama Up In The Air that earned Anna a Golden Globe nod. The 24-year-old actress isn’t a stranger to awards, though: she’s a former Tony nominee for her role in 2003’s Broadway production of Camp .

2. Dianna Agron

As Glee’s pregnant cheerleader Quinn Fabray, Dianna Agron could easily have been pigeon-holed as another pretty blond, but her comedic-timing and pitch-perfect voice have set her apart from the pack of Hollywood wanna-bes. And as soon as The Romantics – the film  the 23-year-old »

Kevin Feige Talks 10 Years of Marvel Movies

31 December 2009 11:27 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

As the first decade of the new millennium comes to an end, we look back at the era that saw our favorite comic book heroes from the house of Stan Lee making the leap from the page to the silver screen.

To bring us a first-hand perspective of the Marvel movie experience, President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige recounted the hard work and big payoffs that catapulted Marvel (and comic book movies on the whole) to the cinematic power horse it is today.

I’ve taken the liberty of cutting down Feige’s quotes to Marvel News down into some smaller snippets that should help spark fond feelings of comic book movie nostalgia:

Trying to Break the “Marvel Curse”

I started at Marvel proper in August 2000; I had been working as an associate producer on “X-Men” in 1998. We worked on that for almost three years. Back in those days there was the “Marvel Curse. »

Secret Identity: Captain America, Conan And More Casting We Want To See In 2010

31 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

It's out with the old and in with the new as 2009 transitions into 2010 in just a few short hours. There's no question that it's been a fantastic, crazy and occasionally tumultuous year for comic book fans thanks to film releases like "Watchmen" and compelling news stories regarding "Iron Man 2," "Green Lantern" and others.

But all of that is in the past now. It's time to look forward at what we can expect in the new year. There are still many announced comic book movies and television shows that lack official casting, but with some of these projects heading into production in 2010, it's only a matter of time before the secrets are revealed.

While we all have our own favorite franchises and characters, these are the five heroes and villains I'm dying to see cast in 2010.

Kevin Feige Looks Back at a Decade of Marvel on the Big Screen

31 December 2009 2:40 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

By now you probably all know who Kevin Feige is - if not, he's the current President of Marvel Studios and is now responsible for bringing us Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Avengers. He began his Marvel career as associate producer on Bryan Singer's X-Men in 1998, even though it didn't hit theaters until 2000. Now a decade later he looks back at how comic book movies have become so much more than just a fad and how there's so much more in store in their future. "As the year 2000 dawned, Marvel Comics had only recently escaped bankruptcy and the company's future stood on shaky ground at best. Flash forward 10 years." "With landmark achievements in film, animation, publishing and digital media behind it, Marvel not only solidified its hold on the comic book world, [but] it established itself as an incredibly successful worldwide entertainment brand with few peers." »

Tim Roth Ready for More Marvel, Hulk

30 December 2009 9:20 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Amidst the excitement of certain A-list actors — Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson — possibly appearing in The Avengers movie together, it’s easy to forget that Academy Award-nominee Tim Roth is also hanging around the Marvel movie universe.

Roth, of course, played the villain Emil Blonsky in 2008’s Incredible Hulk. Despite ultimately getting his Abominable behind whipped by the Green Goliath, the character could conceivably return to cause more trouble for Bruce Banner/Hulk. The question is, besides an Incredible sequel (which might happen, even if Incredible Hulk only grossed about $260 million worldwide), could we potentially see Blonsky appear in such films as the upcoming Avengers or Thor?

In a recent interview with MTV, Roth said he’s signed on for two more films, but doesn’t know where that deal will ultimately lead. However, he pointed out that Incredible Hulk definitely ties into Iron Man, and that those »

Stan Lee on Which Marvel Movies Are Next

30 December 2009 12:32 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Marvel Entertainment has an impressive slate of upcoming movies, with Iron Man 2 opening in 2010, Thor and First Avenger: Captain America in 2011, and The Avengers in 2012. But what movies will Marvel make after that? MTV asked Stan Lee, the 87-year-old co-creator of the comic books, which characters will be next to receive their own movie.

The funny thing is, I think all of them will come to the screen sooner or later because they're always looking for new properties, and Marvel has more than anybody. Doctor Strange I'm sure will be out. You probably know they're working on Ant-Man now. Every one of the Marvel characters, there's somebody working on it. Somebody is trying to put together a story that will work. It's just a matter of time — they can only do so many a year. You don't want to flood the market.

I'm sure [they'll do] The Black Panther, eventually. If »

Stan Lee promises Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Ant-Man films

29 December 2009 4:40 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Marvel's upcoming schedule of comic book movies includes Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America and then culminates in The Avengers in 2012. But what's after that?

There's been some talk of films that may follow. In March, Marvel announced it was planning to hire writers to work on film adaptations of lesser-known characters such as Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk and Vision.

Stan Lee, Marvel's former president and chairman, who turned 87 yesterday, has now chimed in with his own thoughts of what's coming next.

He told MTV: "The funny thing is, I think all of them will come to the screen sooner or later, because they're always looking for new properties, and Marvel has more than anybody.

"Doctor Strange I'm sure will be out. You probably know they're working on Ant-Man now."

In September, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead filmmaker Edgar Wright confirmed he was still working on an Ant-Man movie, »

‘Captain America’ Mini-Update

29 December 2009 10:05 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

With all the fuss being made about Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 and Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, where is the first Avenger?

While there has still been no news on casting (don’t they have to do this ahead of time, if only to make sure their leading man is, you know, muscular?) it appears that we do have a start date: Wolfman director Joe Johnston says that he’s gearing up The First Avenger: Captain America for a June 2010 start.

So there’s that. But still — no word on the script. No mention of the team being assembled. And still no Steve Rogers. Come on, Marvel: you’ve gotta give us something we can believe in!

War Machine Will 'Kick Some Major Ass' In 'Iron Man 2,' Promises Joe Quesada

29 December 2009 9:59 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

There's no shortage of hype surrounding the debut of War Machine in "Iron Man 2," and according to Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, the character will more than live up to his action-packed tease in the new "Iron Man 2" trailer.

"I've actually seen a rough cut of the movie, and it's going to be good," Quesada told MTV News during the opening night of "Marvelous Color," a new art exhibit in Manhattan. The exhibit highlights Marvel's history of prominent African-American characters, with special attention paid to six of the publisher's most well-known heroes: Storm, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Blade, Falcon and of course, War Machine.

"[Don] Cheadle is one of the greatest living American actors, what do you expect?" said Quesada of the actor playing War Machine's alter ego, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, in the blockbuster sequel. "I think fans are going to love it — especially fans of War Machine — and he does kick some major ass. »

Is Black Widow a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent in Iron Man 2?

29 December 2009 4:51 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

While the title of this post is certainly no surprise to fans who know anything about the character of Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff), what we weren’t sure on is whether or not she’d be a part of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Iron Man 2 specifically.

From the latest trailer for Iron Man 2, there is a hint that we’ll be seeing Scarlett Johansson’s Russian super spy join the side of good and work for Nick Fury and The Avengers during the story of this movie.

Warning: If you’re not familiar with the history of Black Widow from Marvel Comics, some of this may act as a plot spoiler for Iron Man 2.

In the books, Natasha Romanoff is initially an enemy of Iron Man (her first mission in the Us involved her assassinating him) but defects to the United States from the Soviet Union. She starts with freelance work for S.H.I.E.L.D., »

Excelsior! Happy Birthday, Stan Lee!

If you're walking down the street today and happen to hear a crowd shouting the word "Excelsior!" over and over again, don't panic — it's simply the comic book community's way of celebrating Stan Lee's birthday.

The acclaimed Marvel Comics creator and writer turns 87 years old today, but you could hardly tell based on Lee's level of activity and unwavering enthusiasm for both his past successes and present projects alike.

Here at Splash Page, we've made a regular habit of speaking about and with Lee, indisputably one of the greatest comic book creators of all time. While it's not surprising that Stan The Man is still hard at work in an industry he helped to revolutionize, he is nonetheless showing up in some surprising places.

Twitter, for example, has become a virtual playground for the Pow! Entertainment founder. Lee told MTV News that using Twitter brings him back to the days of Stan's Soapbox, »

'Captain America' To Start Filming In June?

28 December 2009 7:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Marvel Studios’ “Captain America” movie may finally be heading in front of cameras next June.

According to an interview with director Joe Johnston at Fangoria, Johnston is “readying for a June start” for “The First Avenger: Captain America.”

Information about the “Captain America” film has been in relatively short supply since Johnston — the director of “The Rocketeer” and the upcoming remake of “The Wolfman" — was signed to direct the film last year. "Chronicles of Narnia" screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are also attached to write the script which is reportedly set in World War II.

Given that “Captain America” is scheduled to be released in July 2011 — two months after Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” adaptation hits theaters — it’s somewhat surprising that the lead role has yet to be cast.

Back in 2008, popular speculation centered around Will Smith wielding the shield — rumors which were eventually shot down by Smith himself. »

Joe Johnston Planning to Shoot Captain America Next June

28 December 2009 12:50 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

We haven't heard much from Marvel recently about The First Avenger: Captain America, which is still slated for release in July of 2011. What we do know, though, is that Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III, The Wolfman) is directing and the screenplay is being written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (of all three Chronicles of Narnia movies). Fangoria (via ComingSoon) just published a teaser piece for their upcoming issue that has an interview with Joe Johnston talking about Wolfman. However, near the end of the article they drop a little tidbit about Johnston's plans to start shooting Captain America in June. Here's the key quote: "... recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of The First Avenger: Captain America, which he's readying for a June start." Marvel is preparing to start shooting Kenneth Branagh's Thor in January (as reported here), which I'm sure will shoot at least until »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »
