Storyline

Joey and Michael find Jimmy squatting in Joey's burned-out villa, so they suggest he moves in with lover Gina; the couple fights so much they have lots of make-up sex fun, yet Jimmy still spends more time letting off steam against the Tribbiani boys, ordering them to face the table in Joey's own home, then at Gina's place. Bobbie has arranged for Joey to go out as 'beard' (fake date) with popular actress Edie but Gina deliberately 'forgets' to tell Joey -not his house-mates- she's a lesbian; he still comes to care for Edie, and encourages her to come out of the closet at the awards evening he's accompanying her to... Joey needed to grow
12 June 2016 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

One of them main aims of the Joey spin-off was to show some growth to the character. But all too often this was sacrificed in favour of a cheap laugh.

For the most part of this episode though Joey is showing signs of this but at the vital moment the writers opt to make him out to be dumb again and it's a shame. Whereas 'Friends' allowed the characters to grow episode on episode, 'Joey' seems to hit the restart button each time.

This episode and the last at times were quite lazy in terms of jokes, and you can imagine how hard it must have been at this stage to keep pushing for the best joke when you knew it would unlikely to be heard by many.

Jimmy as a character continues to grow in screen time, and this is surely largely down to Adam Goldberg's performance and the audience reaction to it. The B story involving him and Gina isn't great, but it's fun to see another character taking the weight off of Joey. In contrast, Andrea Anders and Paulo Costanzo are largely passengers here.

After a couple of episodes of dormancy, the Joey/Alex relationship begins to stir again, giving the sense that we are building to something.

Overall, a decent episode, but again one that can't build on a good premise.
