The odd couple
23 April 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Starts off strong with a genuinely exciting (by 80s cartoon standards anyway) dogfight that is rather stylishly animated and put together. But when Slipstream (not exactly a Joe who typically got a lot of screen time, let alone sole focus) has to team up with a hot-headed, Kool-Aid drinking female Strato-Viper pilot, it loses some of its momentum as we watch the ever noble Joe continue to save and help his slow-to-come-around sworn enemy until the light bulb finally appears over her head.

Save for a quick video-con with the aptly named Dr. Mindbender and a few rescuing Joes at the end, Slipstream and Raven (The Viper pilot) are the only human characters featured. Unfortunately they have the chemistry of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton and their time together grows more and more grating. The atmosphere of the abandoned Cobra base is nice, mixing in a little sci-fi horror, but "In the Presence of Mine Enemies" goes about its story business in the most pedestrian way possible, ultimately undermining any of its relative strengths.
