Very enjoyable, but one of the weaker season one episodes...

Warning: Spoilers
I liked this particular episode but have to admit it is one of the weaker ones from season one. That's because to make the show work, the usually nice folks of Mayberry (in particular, Thelma Lou) behave in ways that are inconsistent with their characters--something very atypical for the show. As a result, she comes off as a bit mean-spirited--something very unusual for the show.

This is the first episode to highlight Barney and Thelma Lou. While it's obvious that Barney cares for his girlfriend, he is a sap when it comes to romance and Thelma Lou is naturally frustrated. However, when she decides to make it appear as if Andy is interested in her in order to make Barney jealous, things backfire a bit--but end on a happy note.

Thelma Lou Is Actually Pretty
Hitchcoc27 November 2019
Barney has terminal shyness when it comes to his new squeeze, Thelma Lou. Andy does everything he can to help the skinny deputy. When his advice doesn't help because of Thelma Lou's interference, Barney goes rogue. Sooner or later, Ellie has to get into the act. This could have really gone haywire, but doesn't.

I loved it. I loved when Barney made his moves. It's sweet to see he and Thelma Lou together.

Where's Hilda Mae?
vitoscotti6 October 2022
Whew, Barney (Don Knotts) and Thelma Lou (Betty Lynn) sure got serious awful fast. Hilda Mae (Florence McMichael) appears to have vanished. I guess it's befitting that Barney & Thelma Lou have an uneven beginning to match their odd ending. There isn't any background to the new couples relationship. Barney all of a sudden is painfully shy with the ladies that isn't very funny. Barney is funniest as a confident ladies man (or so he thinks). Andy makes advances toward Thelma Lou when he should be working on the taxpayers dime in the middle of a work day. The Thelma Lou jealousy bit will work better with Jim Nabors and be much funnier. Epilogue laid an egg with Andy being a pest.
