In this season for critical lists, the Best of the Decade survey from the New Yorker's movies editor genuinely stands out
It's the end of the year, and for film critics this is the season for making lists – the best films of the year and, now of course, the best films of the decade. All the papers are doing it and we here are in the process of drawing up our list of the decade's top 100 movies for guardian.co.uk/film. Making lists appeals to the nerdy, Hornby-esque and anally retentive side of all of us. And of course it offers huge opportunities for – whisper it – showing off.
The seasoned list-maker will know how to combine the obscure choices with the mainstream ones, and this latter consideration is important. The seasoned lister knows that the more MoR candidates provide the resonant C-major chords which give solidity and plausibility to the list. »

A Serious Man may be getting rave reviews – but it's like nothing the Coens have made before. Joe Queenan on weird one-offs and the directors who make them
About halfway through the very funny, very disturbing, very ethnic new film A Serious Man, the modern-day Job who is the serious man in question climbs up on to the roof of his ghastly 1960s Minneapolis suburban home and tries to adjust the antenna to improve his TV reception. Beleaguered on all fronts – conjugally, professionally, medically – Larry Gopnik, a dorky physics professor who may be about to lose his job and is very likely to lose his family, is a bright, principled Jewish man whose children have begged him to fix the antenna so they can watch F Troop, an idiotic 1960s comedy. Many of Larry's travails unfold as songs from Jefferson Airplane's seminal 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow play in the background. »

Let's hope Woody Allen is planning on recreating his recent success with Vicky Cristina Barcelona and not the shame of duds such as Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra's Dream as he has a very important and influential star on board, with a husband who wouldn't take kindly to it coming up short.
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French President Nicolas, has agreed to try out acting for the legendary director - having already added politics to the modelling and musical strings on her bow.
Although she has already agreed to be in his next film, she admits that she knows nothing about the role she is set to play or even whether she will be able to act: "I'm not at all an actress. Maybe I'll be absolutely terrible."
But she said that she had entered into the project, despite the lack of details offered to her, because it was an »

The title of Woody Allen's next film has just been revealed: it's the somewhat elongated You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. After his return to New York for Whatever Works, and his Spanish detour for Vicky Christina Barcelona, Allen's latest brings him back to the UK, al la the "trilogy" of Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra's Dream. The funding set up is the same as Vcb's, with Allen co-producing alongside the Spanish Mediapro: the second project of a projected four.As always, the cast is the thing. This time Allen has rounded up Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts (replacing Nicole Kidman), Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto and Lucy Punch. The plot, as sketched by the Hollywood Reporter, "revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives and their attempts to try to solve their problems", which is as good as telling us nothing, except that it's not a thriller. »

Woody Allen likes to keep a little mystery steeped in his upcoming projects -- especially when it comes to the title. Where other projects start off with that nugget of news, he shares it later. So, without further ado, the title of his latest film is, as The Hollywood Reporter posts:
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger
This is the film that stars the likes of Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, and Naomi Watts. Set in London, the film "revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives, and their attempts to try to solve their problems." Before you go thinking that Watts gets to romance all the men -- Gemma Jones, Freida Pinto, and Lucy Punch also star. Considering the title, I'm going to guess that Brolin, Hopkins, and Watts are the family, and Banderas comes and spices things up with Latin lasciviousness.
I've got high hopes for this one. »

Woody Allen has said that he waits until his films are completed to name them because he likes the titles to reflect how good they are. The director told The Daily Telegraph that he has not yet named his current movie, the fourth film he has shot in London after Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra's Dream. Allen said: "I never title a movie until it's finished because if I look at the film and it's no good I don't like to give it an aggressive title. "I give it what I call one of my hiding titles - the kind of title that is low-key and promises nothing, so people are less disappointed (more) »

After being cold-shouldered by the Us studios, Woody Allen turned to globe trotting for both the finance and the settings for his projects. Match Point, Scoop, Cassandra's Dream and his untitled 2009 project have all been set in London, Vicky Cristina Barcelona took place in, well, Barcelona, and now it looks as though he's heading to Brazil for his 2011 production. As well as shooting in Brazil, it looks like Allen will be take some funding for the project from the country too. I read in Brazzil Mag that two different Brazillian production companies are looking to come onboard, Conspiração and 02. As far as I know, there's no reason they can't each chip in. In just a couple of weeks, Allen's producers Stephen Tenenbaum and Letty Aronson will be in town to negotiate: In the first week of October the duo will be landing in São Paulo where, for two days, ... »

Hey Hollywood! Irish actor Colin Farrell says he's ready for a blockbuster role. "I love good action films," he said. "I love the spectacle of guns in the cinema, I really do." Mind you, at least our Colin's honest enough to own up to a more base consideration - the bottom line. "I'd love a big payday cheque," the 33-year-old star said. "I have no moral revulsion to that at all." A blockbuster role wouldn't be too much of a stretch for Farrell who did well in the movie thrillers; 'Daredevil," "Miami Vice" and "Minority Report." "It's just whatever you respond to. If I could find something that was a really big film that I liked," he said. Farrell is currently in Toronto plugging three films; "Ondine," "Triage" and "London Boulevard." The father-to-be also admitted that fatherhood with Ondine co-star Alicja Bachleda wasn't going to slow him down. "Like, »

English filmmaker Mike Leigh has started production on his next new film following the Oscar nominated film Happy-Go-Lucky, which received heaps of critical acclaim. The project is untitled and Leigh is keeping a lid on plot details (much like Woody Allen), but we do know who's in the cast: Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Taking Woodstock), Jim Broadbent (Hot Fuzz, The Damned United, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Philip Davis (Vera Drake, Cassandra's Dream), David Bradley (Filch in Harry Potter) and Stuart McQuarrie (28 Days Later, "The Bill"). Quite an impressive English cast. Many of Leigh's regular crew also are on board as well, including Oscar nominated cinematographer Dick Pope (The Illusionist, Happy-Go-Lucky), editor Jon Gregory, casting director Nina Gold, costume designer Jacqueline Durran and hair and make-up supervisor Chrissie Blundell. I wish we had more to tell you about this, but that's all their »

Mean Magazine indie publisher Kashy Khaledi's Cinemash viral videos are getting mounds of online buzz for their hilarious and star-studded movie sends-up of flicks like "Dirty Dancing," "Tron," "Oldboy," "Sid and Nancy," "Training Day" and "Carrie," the latest, that premiered here on MTV Movies Blog yesterday. To celebrate the final announced release in Cinemash's first "season," Khaledi took some time out of his busy schedule to give us the deets on how his brainchild came to fruition.
Mean Magazine already had access to the stars peppering the Cinemash videos because of its glossy print pub. As Khaledi revealed, it was an innovative and cool way to extend the mag's reach online. Mean was already doing off-the-wall photo shoots, like one with Ewan McGregor as Woody Allen around the time of his star turn in the director's "Cassandra's Dream," or the one with Kate Beckinsale as the doomed Tolstoy character Anna »

(Cinematical Rewind is a new column that showcases some of our favorite posts from the past few years. Here's Jeffrey M. Anderson's famous Cinematical Seven from 7/22/08)
Occasionally Hollywood cobbles together random members of the A-list to play family members on film, even if their genes obviously come from opposite ends of the earth. If the actors are good enough or if the chemistry is there, sometimes the combo can work, such as Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman as brothers in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead or Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor in Cassandra's Dream. Other times, it stretches credibility, such as Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited. My all-time favorite oddball casting is in Sidney Lumet's Family Business (1989), with Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick playing grandfather, father and son. (Huh?) At the same time, there are actor combos out there »

It's already a minority opinion, but I enjoyed Woody Allen's newest, Whatever Works. I won't go so far to classify it as A-level Woody Allen, but it's solidly in the high B range - funny, heartfelt, with hokey jokes and occasionally surprising insights. I'll admit it right off the bat: I'm in the tank for Woody Allen. Not unreservedly. In the past decade, I've found some of his films more substantial and meaningful (Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) than others (Cassandra's Dream, Curse of the Jade Scorpion). But I'll go so far as to say that Woody Allen's humor was a key in my early (and continuing) idea of what comedy could be - from his early stand-up appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show or The Tonight Show through a movie career of 40 years (and an incredible 40 films). These days, at... »

Filmmaker Woody Allen is embarking on a new bid to conquer London - with the help of Hollywood stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Josh Brolin.
Allen abandoned his native New York in 2005 to make three movies in the British capital; Match Point, Scoop and Cassandra's Dream.
The big screen trio failed to live up to expectation, prompting to Allen to turn his attentions to Spain, where he scored a hit in 2008 with Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Now Allen is returning to the U.K. and has lined up the two heavyweights to headline his latest top secret project.
Shooting will begin in London in the summer. »

Hello, and welcome to "That didn't do very well" week of DVD releases. To be fair, a couple of these movies were successful. But of the eight new releases we're highlighting, I'd say five were commercial failures. They're lifted this week, however, by the most profitable movie of 2008. More on that later.
Incidentally, our list is just an overview of some of the bigger releases. For a complete rundown, including re-released DVDs and TV series box sets you can pick up today, check out Video Eta.
While watching Lakeview Terrace, I realized for the first time that Samuel L. Jackson's true talent is in making bad movies better.
Let's face it: Sam has been in a lot of garbage over the years. But he's seldom hard to watch. And without him, Lakeview Terrace is nothing to write home about.
The movie did pretty well last fall, and »

Colin Farrell is getting back into it. For years, I just considered the guy as someone with a really good agent but didn't deserve his fame and A-list status. But he showed me something with "In Bruges" and to a lesser extent, "Cassandra's Dream". Now he'll be teaming up with William Monaghan, the award-winning screenwriter of "The Departed", for Monaghan's directorial debut, "London Boulevard". Also on board is Keira Knightley who my friend Cait hates but I adore because she sure is purdy. The film follows a South London criminal (Farrell) who, after release from prison, tries to give up the gangster life by becoming a handyman for a reclusive young actress (Knightley). I sense some second-act conflict when she discovers, just as she's starting to fall for him, about his criminal past. Prove me wrong, Monaghan! »
