10 Film Franchises That Need To Be Stopped

11 May 2013 11:51 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Hollywood has found safety these days with brand recognition.

It seems that there’s no point in taking a chance on something new or risky, when you can just slap a pre-existing brand name onto a diluted franchise and watch as people turn out in their droves.

As soon as they have a surprise hit at the box office, they repackage it and milk it for all it’s worth. Think the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise or Saw. If the numbers are to be believed then it’s a trend that doesn’t look like it’ll go away.

So I say it’s time to have a look at franchises that are continually pumping out mindless dreck that we are happy to pay for over and over again, except each time with a different coat of paint.

Lindsay Lohan wants to quit rehab. The 26-year-old actress - who recently began 90 days of court-ordered treatment after pleading 'no contest' to lying to police about being behind the wheel during a car crash last June - is furiously planning to escape from the Betty Ford Centre after doctors decided to cut off her supply of Adderall, the psycho-stimulant medication, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Adhd) and narcolepsy. A source told gossip website TMZ.com that the 'Scary Movie 5' star was stripped of her medication after doctors evaluated her this week and decided she does not need it, despite her claims that she suffers from Adhd. "Iron Man 3" Rules the World!

6 May 2013 11:26 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

"Iron Man 3" takes the world hostage over the weekend with a staggering box-office performance. In the U.S. alone, the third film in the "Iron Man" saga opened with $175.9 million making it the second biggest U.S. debut of a film ever! And that is next to Marvel's "The Avengers" with $200.30 opening same time last year.

Here's a nifty graphic of all-time U.S. opening, thanks to our friends at Huffpost.

Overseas, "Iron Man 3" starring Robert Downey Jr. from director Shane Black made half-billion dollars in less than two weeks for a worldwide total of $680.1 million.

With a box-office performance like that, it's hard for Disney and Marvel not to shower Downey Jr. with more money just so he'll return to the franchise after making it public that he's going to hang up the iron suit.

Here's the estimated Top 10 Box-Office films for weekend of May 3rd:

Iron Man 3 shows its mettle with $175m Us box-office launch weekend

Robert Downey Jr's future as Tony Stark is uncertain, but the Iron Man series looks set to run and run – and Marvel storylines are becoming increasingly intertwined

The summer blockbuster season arrived in emphatic style at the weekend as Iron Man 3 stirred up a torpid Us box office to deliver the second biggest weekend launch in history on an estimated $175.3m. Only Marvel Studios stablemate The Avengers has done better, opening almost exactly a year ago on $207.4m, a figure so far ahead of everything else that it seems as if the only movie that stands a chance of beating it is its own sequel, due in 2015.

But that should take nothing away from the latest adventures of Tony Stark and his thrilling alter ego. Reunited with his Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black when Jon Favreau stepped aside after the first two Iron Man blockbusters, Robert Downey Jr »

Iron Man 3 and Robert Downey Jr. Soar to $175.3 Million Opening Weekend

5 May 2013 8:34 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Disney and Marvel's Iron Man 3 ignited the 2013 Summer Movie Season this weekend. The much-anticipated follow up easily commanded the North American box office and left everything else in the dust. The return of Tony Stark helped bring the box office up 168% from last weekend, but wasn't enough to top last year's top ten at this time when Marvel's The Avengers arrived and began its conquest of the 2012 box office.

While the latest film in the Iron Man series technically is a follow up to the 2010 second installment, Marvel and Disney are treating this more like a follow up to The Avengers. Since the latter was better liked and a bigger success than Iron Man 2, the strategy proved to be a smart one. Iron Man 3 landed in 4,253 theaters - of which a percentage were IMAX and 3D equipped - and went on to earn a phenomenal $175.3 million ($41, 218 per »
