Mother and Child
Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.
The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not

10 Must-Own DVDs (and Blu-rays) from the Decade

The ReelzChannel 100 began when we asked Leonard Maltin for his favorite Hidden Gems of the decade. His list led the web team into a general discussion about the best movies of the decade and — after no small amount of debate, arguing, and (we're not proud to say) some petty name-calling — we decided we'd better bring it to an end with a company-wide vote. Then it was just a matter of tallying up the votes and hoping for the best. Lucky for us, ReelzChannel is filled with a staff ranging from movie lovers to movie fanatics. What turned out isn't what you'll find on a critic's best of list — instead it's what movie fans really enjoyed.
In day two of the ReelzChannel 100, we highlight the 10 best DVDs and Blu-rays from the past decade.

Ho Ho Ho! It’s that time of the year for giving and receiving and if your having trouble finding the perfect gift for your loved one then i will hopefully mention something that will help fill that stocking in time for 25th December.
I’m going to run down my top Blu-Ray films, Top DVD’s, Top TV Boxsets and Top anything else that I think are must haves this year.
We’ve added links to Zavvi.com who are currently offering free delivering on everything so make sure you check them out.
Blu-ray and DVD Films
I’ll start with Blu-Ray/DVD films. Blu-Rays have reduced in price incredibly in the run up to Christmas and if you shop around then you will find all sort of deals like 2-4-1’s or 2 for a nice low price, and it’s still not to late to get them in time for Christmas.

The prices plummeted this year, so Blu-ray players are likely to be under plenty of Christmas trees. Phelim O'Neill advises what to play on them
Blockbusters
Jj Abrams's rebooted Star Trek (Paramount) was not only the sole moment of unbridled fun in this year's blockbuster season but the best, full bells and whistles Blu-ray issue, too. With its sparkling HD visuals (not a given for Blu-ray), vibrant soundtrack and exhaustive supplementary material, it's ideal for showing to anyone who dares ask, "Why all the fuss about Blu-ray?"
Documentary
Let's not forget the educational importance of Blu-ray. Actually, let's do, as the picture quality on series like David Attenborough's Planet Earth and Life (BBC) is so gobsmackingly pristine that the senses are too overloaded to take in any useful information. Better to go for slightly lower-fi stuff, documentaries where the pictures do all the talking

Plastic trees could save the planet. That's bad news for woodpeckers and lumberjacks, says Sam Wollaston
I've had a look at the TV listings and it gets much cheerier next week: lots of celebrity chefs and their Christmas cookalongs. But this week is all about Copenhagen, the earth, and its imminent demise. Hot Planet (BBC1) is a handy catch-up for anyone who hasn't been paying attention. Industrialisation, fossil fuels, planes, cars, cows and our homes have all produced greenhouse gases that have made the earth warmer. And that causes all sorts of problems. A one-degree rise is bad but inevitable; two degrees would be worse; three catastrophic.
If the permafrost of the frozen north melts, along with the Arctic sea ice and the Greenland icecap, there will be terrifying rises in sea levels. Great cities – Amsterdam, Venice, New York, King's Lynn – will disappear below the waves, and vast quantities of greenhouse gases,

'New Moon' star Chaske Spencer and United Global Shift look to attain real ecological sustainability

Chaske Spencer, "Sam Uley" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is currently working hard with United Global Shift to help instill a shift in perceptions (and, in turn, actions) about the ecological health of Planet Earth.
The mission of United Global Shift is as follows:
We are causing a united global shift in what is possible for humanity, focusing on the environment, employment, entrepreneurship, health and education. A shift from survival and scarcity to possibility, partnership and peace.
Seemingly, the end is simple, but the means are what matter, and United Global Shift looks to instill an understanding of the need for long-term, sustainable environmental action measures that will really make a difference in the future of environmental protection (and, consequentially, c

Great New Avatar Featurette!

The videos for Avatar are beginning to literally pour in as we get closer to the film's theatrical release, and quite a few of them are hoping to better inform us about the film. Take the latest featurette for instance, which comes off like Discovery's Planet Earth series, but instead of detailing Earth we have Sigourney Weaver giving a lesson on the planet Pandora.
Avatar Featurette Discusses Pandora
The good people at TrailerAddict have posted a new featurette for Avatar that runs for about four minutes in an attempt to introduce us to most of the concepts of Pandora, be it foliage or the indigenous animals. Very cool, and it does show new footage, so check it out by clicking the image below.

Sigourney Weaver Narrates Awesome Avatar Featurette

Fox is doing a fantastic job building interest in James Cameron's Avatar if my rapidly increasing curiosity is any indication. My eyes are glued to the television with each new TV spot in anticipation of peeking some new footage.
Then something like this new featurette comes along that should seal the deal for anyone on the fence about seeing Avatar theatrically. Narrated by Sigourney Weaver in a deliberate nod to her work with BBC's Planet Earth series drawing parallels between our world and the film's, the nearly four-minute long look at Pandora's landscape, inhabitants and ecology blows the door open on how majestic the alien world James Cameron has concocted is. And we're not even seeing it in 3D yet.
The featurette is viewable at Canal Plus (via AICN), a French website. But don't worry; the narration is in English. Go see it now.

Sigourney Weaver Narrates Best Avatar Featurette Yet

I've been very clear in recent weeks about how very, very sick I am of writing about new Avatar featurettes, but listen up: there's a new one, and it's actually awesome. Narrated by Sigourney Weaver herself, and very much in the style of the Planet Earth series that Weaver narrated stateside, it's a faux-documentary about Pandora, explaining the creatures found there, the element that humans are mining, and even exactly where the planet is located in relation to Earth.
Not only is it a clever play on Planet Earth, but it's also presents the most convincing evidence yet that seeing Avatar really will be like visiting some new planet of James Cameron's imagination. You can find the featurette at the French site Canal Plus (via AICN). Trust me, it's worth it.

Eco-Friendly Fire: Militaries Try Saving the Planet While Killing the Enemy

Call it the Al Gore Effect or just an inconceivable truth, but the Pentagon, among other members of the Military Industrial Complex, actually are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint. In fact, they are so concerned for the future of Planet Earth they want to go about their business--the business of killing--in a far more eco-friendly way.
The Pentagon is reportedly sinking millions of dollars into green weapons such as lead-free bullets that will not poison water supplies or soil, whether it's on an actual battlefield or a shooting range on a military base. A Pentagon spokesman told the U.K. site The First Post that the objective was to create a bullet "that can kill you or that you can shoot a target with ... which is not an environmental hazard."
Another example of the Pentagon's new Green consciousness is the recent announcement by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus of

Talking to another national treasure, Michael Palin, Attenborough reveals how he was turned down by BBC radio, only to go on to land a job with the fledgling TV service. Though he rose to become the director of programmes, he's best known for fronting classic wildlife series such as Life On Earth and The Blue Planet. Also showing are examples from his oeuvre including The Life of Birds and Planet Earth, looking at wildlife in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Box Office: Disaster Porn Rules the Planet

Who says there’s no profit in blowing up the world a billion times over? Don’t tell Roland Emmerich that. The German director has blown up, imperiled, or invaded the Planet Earth at least a half dozen times in his career, and his latest, the mother of all disaster epics “2012″ crashed, demolished, and mass murdered the global population on its way to a $65 million domestic box office debut (and $225 million worldwide). Set in the year 2012, when it is believed that the Mayan Calender will predict the end of the world, the $200 million dollar movie stars John Cusack as an Everyman turned superhero who somehow always manages to survive one mega disaster after another. Danny Glover plays the President who is, no doubt, too old for this shit.
Last week’s #1, the Jim Carrey animated “A Christmas Carol” humbugged its way to second place with another $22 million, giving it a two-week total of $63 million.

DreamWorks Studios and Doubleday have acquired, in a pre-emptive deal, the rights to Daniel H. Wilson’s unpublished manuscript, “Robopocalypse,” it was announced today by Mark Sourian and Holly Bario, Co-Presidents of Production at the studio, and Jason Kaufman, Executive Editor and Vice President, at Doubleday.
DreamWorks acquired the film rights from literary manager Justin Manask and is putting the project into accelerated development. Kaufman acquired world publishing rights to “Robopocalypse” from Laurie Fox at the Linda Chester Literary Agency and a tentative 2011 publication date has been set for the book.
“Robopocalypse” explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.
Mark Sourian said:
“Daniel H. Wilson’s cautionary tale of man versus machine grabbed us from the very beginning”
“Wilson’s background in robotics and artificial intelligence grounds his story with a frightening level of realism and he has created an exhilarating story that we think audiences will really respond to.
