Young David is celebrating his 8 year old bday along with Helen(which is only half heartedly acknowledged) unfortunately, for David he appears to have no kids his age as a friend as not one child has been invited to his bday party. Even sadder, the only people invited to the party, the Ropers n the Brookes are fighting with each, which threatens the puppet show that Stanley n Jeffery have promised the young, lonely, friendless David. Spoiler alert- the puppet show does go on, although somewhat acrimoniously n the Ropers n the Brookes make peace as best they can, thanks to the wisdom of Jenny, the Ropers boarder and young, friendless David.

A party is being planned for David and Helen's birthdays. David finds his big present, a bicycle, after being told by Stanley. In an argument, Jeffrey steps on the spice rack that was Helen's present from Stanley. Helen and Anne talk about how unreasonable the men were being, leading to a rift between the women. Helen and Anne feel the couples should stay away from one another and leave angrily. The couples force themselves together for David's sake, but the women remain testy toward one another. Jeffrey and Stanley put on a comedy puppet show for David, but insults to one another leads to another heated argument. Jenny shows up, hopeful to impart a lesson on all.
