Pretty useless science fiction creature feature.
4 April 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Savage Planet, however lenient one tries to be, is a really bad film. I believe its a Sci Fi Channel original, which accounts for a lot of its problems but even by the standards of low budget creature movies this is pretty weak stuff. Lacking even the idiotic amusement value of trash like Sabretooth, this is more dispiriting, for it largely lacks in humour or laughable jump moments and also manages to squander a fine premise. The film is set in a future where a polluted Earth is dying, so a team of explorers must head to a new planet, classified as OK for occupation in order to scope it out. There is talk about projects and corporations but essentially its a case of people going to a new planet via teleportation and then facing mutant cave bears once the teleporter goes on the fritz and strands them. Now, if you dig silly sci fi and monsters you probably perked up a little at the mention of mutant bears and in fact the bears are perhaps the best thing about this film. Clearly matted into the film from nature programmes, these so called mutant bears are in fact standard, regulation bears and as such have a great, looming presence that makes all their appearances pretty fun just because bears are majestic animals. Sadly, the film does not use its bears to good effect, preferring them to wreak cgi gore that is OK if fake looking in a couple of places and at one point horrendous and among the worst gore effects I have ever seen. For bears, one would be far better off just watching a anture program. Acting wise, everyone is pretty average, no one too disgraceful, with Sean Patrick Flannery doing all right as the hero and Reagan Pasternak OK as the love interest. Both have a certain presence and should probably be appearing in slightly higher level stuff than this. Director Paul Lynch, who made Prom Night and Humongous back in the 80's does his best, but some of the attacks are very poor and he struggles to bring the film to any kind of a decent level. Altogether, this film just isn't very good at all. It is ever so slightly watchable in an awful, how bad can this really get kind of way and its weak writing, inane dialogue and general lack of quality make it occasionally funny, but I can't recommend it to anyone other than die hard fans of this kind of material. All else should stay away.
