Laurence Payne (Johnny Ringo) returned to the series in The Two Doctors: Part One (1985)/The Two Doctors: Part Two (1985)/The Two Doctors: Part Three (1985) as Dastari. He is one of few actors to appear with three different incarnations of the Doctor (William Hartnell in "The Gunfighters" and Patrick Troughton and Colin Baker in "The Two Doctors"). (He would also appear in the fourth Doctor's The Leisure Hive: Part One (1980).)
Patrick Troughton was offered the role of Johnny Ringo, but was unavailable. He would later replace William Hartnell as The Doctor.
Although the character of Johnny Ringo doesn't appear until part 3, the role was regarded as the main guest star for this serial.
