The Lord of Kobol speaketh
28 May 2008 | by (Rijswijk, ZH, Netherlands) – See all my reviews

This 6 minute short is the first presentation on the bonus disc of the Battlestar Galactica limited edition boxed set (which sadly is not included in all versions). It's a one man show as series creator Glen Larson does all the talking and mentions to name an impressive amount of influences in a short space of time, from his own Mormon believes to 'Chariots of the Gods', Egyptian and Greek mythology, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Exodus and plain old American westerns. He even manages to slip in some ideas of his own like what if Antartica was originally Atlantis and what if Heaven was a planet (like the planet Kobol was to the Colonials of the Galactica). All of this is of course accompanied by well chosen footage from the series and some more of those wonderful outtakes and deleted scenes that this bonus disc is filled to the rim with.

Amongst the never before seen footage, we even get a good look at Count Iblis (Patrick Macnee) true (demonic) form 'War of the Gods part two (episode 14), which looks like a swine. Larson also talks about the revelation scene from that same episode that has been a topic of speculation amongst Galactica fans for many years now. What exactly didn't Apollo & Starbuck want Sheba to see inside Iblis crashed ship? A pair of cloven hooves. Just like the longer documentary 'Remembering Battlestar Galactica', Larsen concludes with the lament that the series got canceled just when it was getting interesting. There could have been so much more had it lasted longer (nobody on the entire disc ever mentions Galactica 80, naturally). Although die-hard fans won't actually learn very much they didn't already know, it is still nice to see the mind behind the Battlestar at work and finally getting a bit of respect for his work after all these years.
