Mask Revealed: A Conversation with Director Peter Bogdanovich (2004)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
This 20-minute featurette has director Peter Bogdanovich going over his film MASK, which he presented on DVD for the first time in its original version. Bogdanovich starts off talking about how he got interested in the film and then he moves into the casting. He talks about Rob Lowe almost getting the part but said Eric Stoltz ended up getting it simply by how he read a line. He then starts to discuss Cher and how they had a rocky relationship going all the way back to when he was writing for The Saturday Evening Post and said something she didn't like. He then talks about the studio demanding her do a screentest and during shooting how the two didn't get along very well, although he states how badly they were against one another has been exaggeration over the years. The most interesting stuff deals with the original cut of the movie, which featured several Bruce Springsteen songs, which eventually had to be cut. He also introduces a couple others scenes that had to be cut and he discusses what some of the problems were in regards to these scenes. Fans of the movie should really enjoy this featurette as Bogdanovich is always worth listening to and he shares some pretty interesting stories. Getting to hear about the original version and why it was changed was fascinating as was hearing the director talking about the issues he had with the star.
