Jay Basu Recruited For Universal Monsters Brain Trust

1 December 2014 10:59 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As Universal powers full steam ahead with its plans to relaunch its library of classic movie monsters, red-hot writer Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent) has become the latest scribe to join a brain trust being set up to mastermind the studio’s ambitious endeavor. It’s unclear which entry in Universal Monsters Basu will be personally heading up (if any), but his feedback will be incorporated into all projects under the banner.

Super-producers Alex Kurtzman (TransformersThe Amazing Spider-Man) and Chris Morgan (the Fast & Furious franchise) are serving as the architects of Universal Monsters, which will expand and join together a network of classic monsters. So far, Universal has also recruited Fargo scribe/creator Noah HawleyPrisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski and Now You See Me scribe Ed Solomon to help with the effort. Out of those writers, only Guzikowski has been tasked with a specific script – for The Wolfman.

Universal’s Monster reboots will Not be horror movies

16 November 2014 11:42 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As reported quite a lot as of late, Universal are rebooting their classic monsters for a “Marvel-esque” series of movies where they will intertwine and come together for a big cross over movie at the end. We know that Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, set for release next year, will kick things off and there is an unknown monster movie for 2017 which may or may not be The Wolf Man.

But one thing that may surprise some (or not to those who remember the last reboot to The Mummy), this series will be moving away from its classic horror routes and going for something a bit different.

“We don’t have any capes [in our film library],” said Universal’s Chairman Donna Langley. “But what we do have is an incredible legacy and history with the monster characters. We’ve tried over the years to make monster movies — unsuccessfully, actually. So, we took a good, »

Here's Your 'Universal Monsters' Brain Trust

13 November 2014 8:29 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

There's been a fair amount of rumbling come out of Universal lately, with their ambitious plan to relaunch their classic monster franchises. We know that they want to emulate Marvel Studios by creating a massive, shared universe that's all interconnected, and then have the "phases" culminate in "Vs" and team-up films. But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, we know that they're also going to borrow from the creative process of another very successful studio: Pixar.

THR is reporting that several writers have been hired to form a collective of talent that's meant to oversee all of the films. Yesterday, it was announced that Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) had been tapped to write The Wolfman. He joins Chris Morgan and Alex Kurtzman, who have all ready been hard at work creating the plans. Now there's word of two other new members of the team: Noah Hawley (The Fargo TV show) and Ed Solomon (Men in Black, »

Aaron Guzikowski Hired For Universal's The Wolfman

12 November 2014 4:56 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Writing teams, it would appear, are the new big idea for shared universe films, given the successes of Marvel’s creative board for its movies and the auspicious work of Disney Animation/Pixar's “brain trusts”. Universal wants in on that action, hiring PrisonersAaron Guzikowski and Fargo TV adaptation man Noah Hawley to work on its monster movie films. They join Ed Solomon, who will be working alongside chief creative bods Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan on developing a linked series bringing classic Universal creatures such as The Mummy and The Wolfman back to life on screen. The plan is for the writers to work together developing the movies, pitching in ideas and helping with problems before splitting off to write the scripts separately, and then meeting back up to discuss them. Kurtzman, the Star Trek/Transformers veteran, is already at work on the Mummy film, which he’ll also direct for June 24, 2016. Guzikowski, »

Universal Looking at 'Prisoners' Screenwriter for New 'Wolf Man'

12 November 2014 2:35 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The classic Universal monster movies are classics for a reason. They are extremely well crafted pieces focusing on a creepy tone rather than jump scares. They created characters that were both frightening and vulnerable. They are really interesting films, and I do not know if we will be able to get back to that, given the way horror has been trending the last couple of decades. Universal wants to keep their properties viable, though. So, with the surprising box office success of Dracula Untold, Universal is going back to all of their classic characters, including the Wolf Man. Even though they already tried this just a couple of years ago with Benicio Del Toro, they might as well try it again. Deadline reports the studio is reaching out to screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski, who wrote last year's pretty good film Prisoners, to pen the screenplay for the updated take on the lycanthrope. »

Universal Developing The Wolf Man Reboot

12 November 2014 11:21 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Marvel has set the standard for connecting characters in the same universe and with their newly revealed massive movie slate, DC is attempting to capture that intertwined magic and Universal also looks to create their own shared universe by relaunching their popular monsters. The Mummy reboot is already scheduled to come out in 2016 and it’s now been revealed that a new The Wolf Man movie is in the works.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has set their sights on Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband, Prisoners, SundanceTV’s The Red Road) to pen the script for The Wolf Man reboot. The latest take on the werewolf would fit into the shared universe of relaunched Universal Monsters, an undertaking that’s overseen by Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Transformers) and Chris Moran (Fast & Furious series).

'Wolf Man' to Be Next Universal Monsters Shared Universe Movie?

12 November 2014 10:05 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Universal Monsters Shared Universe franchise announced back in July keeps getting bigger and bigger, with the studio rumored to be developing a reboot of The Wolf Man.

Prisoners screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski has reportedly come aboard to write the script, although no details were given about how this classic character will be rebooted. Universal's Dracula Untold was confirmed last month to be the first in this series. Although it wasn't initially envisioned as a part of the franchise, a prologue scene that showed Luke Evans' title character in a modern-day market is what helps kick off this universe.

The Untitled Mummy Reboot will fully launch the franchise, arriving in theaters June 24, 2016, with the studio announcing last month that an unspecified monster movie will hit theaters on April 21, 2017. It isn't known if The Wolf Man or another project will occupy this date yet.

Prisoners Scribe Aaron Guzikowski May Get The Wolf Man Howling Again For Universal

12 November 2014 8:33 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

We’ve known for some time that Universal is trying to breathe new life into its catalogue of classic movie monsters, with Dracula Untold introducing a new bloodsucker in the form of Luke Evans, and a new Mummy on the way that will find Alex Kurtzman (executive producer, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) directing from a script by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange). Now, a new rumor has surfaced claiming that the studio wants Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski to write a new take on The Wolf Man, one of its most treasured monsters.

News of Guzikowski’s involvement was embedded in a Deadline report on Universal’s plans for new Fast & Furious movies earlier today. Nothing else has yet come out about The Wolf Man, but the report indicates that the studio is doing its best to expedite the resurgence of its Universal Monsters franchise. Guzikowski, whose work on Prisoners was roundly »

In October, Rick Baker appeared in an Academy-approved video, touring industry outsiders around his makeup studio, a treasure trove of special effects wonderment. Movies 10-1

10. Videodrome (1983) directed by David Cronenberg

In David Cronenberg’s world, sex hurts so good; it’s innately disgusting and primeval but at the same time beautiful and becoming. (Kind of like sex in the real world, when you think about it.) Bodies degenerate and mental states corrode under the influence of lust, and yet something new is engendered by the collision of bodies, bodily fluids, the ripping of flesh and the mangling of organs. Through the carrion of ugly comes the attractive flesh, the new flesh. Videodrome, as Jonathan Lethem once quipped, remains Cronenberg’s most penetrative film; he creates a world at once rooted in modernity circa 1983–a world afraid of the advent of television usurping our humanity, over-stimulated times ushering in the end times–and existing in a timeless, placeless vacuum. It’s vast and claustrophobic, prescient and paranoid, of the same lineage as early James Cameron »

Cinematic Universes, the Latest Hollywood Trend

21 October 2014 11:35 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

At the end of Dracula Untold, the setting shifts from the fantasy plains of Transylvania to the streets of modern day society with the main character, Vlad, dressed to the nines in a suit and chasing a woman who looks just like his deceased wife. As the vampire walks away with the girl, his master looks on coyly before getting up and announcing, “let the games begin.”

This seems to be the phrase that is setting up future cinematic universes for multiple studios after the mass appeal and success of Marvel’s The Avengers and the movies that both led up to and followed this film, all intersecting in both small and large ways.

This trend of studios looking to find the “next Avengers” seems to be sweeping with the latest example being the scene mentioned from Dracula Untold, which is set to begin the Universal monsters universe that includes Frankenstein, »

'Dracula Untold' Producer Confirms Ties to Universal Monsters Reboot

Yesterday, there was a story going around that Universal's forthcoming vampire origin story Dracula Untold had some reshoots done in order to tie it into the studios forthcoming reboot of their classic monsters universe that will include The Mummy, Frankenstein, The Wolfman and more. However, it seemed shaky since the ties to the Universal Monsters universe being put together by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were said to be good enough to link the film to the world of these monsters, but small enough that if the film bombed, it wouldn't hurt the future potential of the series that will actually be rebooted by The Mummy. But it turns out the ties to the Universal Monsters universe are there. Read on! Dracula Untold producer Alissa Phillips spoke to HeyUGuys at the premiere of the film in the United Kingdom yesterday and revealed, "When we started out we weren’t [part of the Universal Monsters series], but »
