Quirky comedy that will hopefully come out on video.

Unarmed Combat is a strange comedy. The word 'quirky' used in its publicity is probably the most concise word for describing the movie. I would describe it as a comedy of obsessions set amid the banality of life. The central setting for the movie is an cluttered, antiquated laundry shop that looks more at home in the 50s or 60s than in modern Singapore. That contrasts strangely with the square lines of HDBland where the boss and his wife live. The aural background to the movie was decent with some nice highlights: watch out for the handphone ring tone and the Koel call. There was one or two parts where I thought the sound editing was a bit clumsy. But for a 19 day film and $100,000 budget from the Singapore Film Commission's Film Incubator Programme, I'd say that it was a good job.

Now that the cinema run is done. I hope it will be released on video because I want to get a copy. Hopefully the video release will contain the 19min short of the same title that Director Han Yew Kwang produced in 2004.
