What is distracting about this episode is two characters, played by actors who have appeared in Taggart before. There are two stories running through this show tonight. Firstly, we have the murder of a bright student who appears set to win a scholarship. Secondly, DC Jackie Reid finds romance with Professor Sean Murray, who later becomes the prime suspect.

At first the team suspect the crime is race related because the victim is Muslim. However, when another student is murdered the team suspect a simpler reason - jealousy.

This episode has it all - race, computer espionage and academic snobbery. It is a pleasant change from the drivel of the last few weeks.

Taggart is changing. Once the grubby side of Glasgow featured heavily in the story line. Now the city is seen in a kinder light with clean streets and universities. Even the old police station has had a face lift.

Although I keep wondering, why do they still call it Taggart?
