A documentary about the killing spree of Brenda Spencer, the 16-year-old schoolgirl who opened fire on a school playground in January 1979, killing two men and injuring eight children. Her only explanation of her actions was "I don't like Mondays". This incident was the first ever school shooting of its kind, and inspired the Boomtown Rats' number one hit song "I Don't Like Mondays". Written by thomaswake16

I Don't Like Mondays
9 May 2015 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

In 1979, Bob Geldof wrote a song that became a massive hit worldwide (except in America); this is the shocking, true story behind that song. On the morning of January 29, 1979, a 16 year old girl with long red hair sat in the window of her home opposite a San Diego primary school and opened fire on its young pupils as they turned up for the day's classes. Before she surrendered calmly to the police, two men lay dead: the headmaster and the caretaker - or in American-English, the principal and janitor/custodian of this elementary school.

The only reason Brenda Spencer gave for her murderous outburst was that she didn't like Mondays. This documentary, made as Spencer was about to apply for parole, revisits that terrible day talking to survivors, law enforcement, and the family of Burton Wragg, one of the men who sacrificed their lives to protect their charges. We hear also from Spencer, who does not speak to the camera, but there is both archive footage and film of her parole application. As might be expected, the years have not been kind to her, and she is now overweight as well as physically unattractive.

This was not quite the first American school shooting as claimed here; that actually dates to 1764! Nor did Spencer "reveal" in 2001 that she had been sexually abused by her father; she claimed she had. There is a big difference, and although her father is a bit odd he does not warrant this vile slander. Aside from those two points, this is a fairly decent documentary.
