Trivia

Krusty's failed attempt at singing the national anthem is a reference to Roseanne Barr's infamous rendition of the song on July 25, 1990 before a baseball game between the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds at Jack Murphy Stadium. Unable to hear herself over the PA system, Barr claimed that she had to sing very loudly, making her performance screechy, and offending many viewers, including then-President, George Bush, who declared it "disgraceful". Quotes

Lisa: Bart! What are you doing in my room?
Bart Simpson: Lisa, certain differences - rivalries, if you will - have arisen between us. At first I thought that we could talk it out, like grown-ups. But instead, I just ripped the head off Mr. Honeybunny!
Lisa: [confused] Bart, that was your cherished childhood toy.
Bart Simpson: AH! Mr. Honeybunny!
[pushes the head back on, and kisses it]

Comedy Perfection

"Lisa on Ice" remains one of my all time favourite Simpsons episodes. It demonstrates what a brilliantly layered and textured comedy should look like. The overall premise of Bart and Lisa's sibling rivalry, fueled by Homer's escalating push for competition is a winner in itself but what really impressed me about the episode was the density and frequency of so many smart, witty jokes throughout. This typifies vintage Simpsons for me and something I find magical about the show is not matter how many times I have seen an episode I always seem to discover new jokes that I had missed before. Some of my favourites of the episode include Lisa's discovery that Monster Island is actually a peninsula and Homer's unfulfilled request for ketchup for his salad.
