Fascinating look at cross cultural identity
1 September 2006 | by (Australia) – See all my reviews

What a great film! I saw this film at the Sydney International Film Festival a couple of years ago. It takes a really interesting look at a small Chinese community in Sydney, Australia and uses it as a vehicle to study cross cultural identity. The film takes a unique approach combining drama and documentary approaches, using a fictionalized letter written by the filmmaker to his dead grandmother, which tells the story of the search for cultural 'belongingness' by exploring a small traditional Cantonese community that lives next door to a Taoist temple located in inner Sydney. The film straddles drama and documentary, the real and the imaginary, the mundane and the spiritual, to illustrate the gulf between two cultures. Well directed, beautifully shot and the music was just lovely.
