Energetic, understated and wonderfully overacted docudrama telling an interesting and often compelling hitherto untold story. Shot in a unique black-and-white collage style, it intersposes real-life interviews and archive footage. Probably the closest comparable project is 1978's "Newsfront", in terms of its referential, historical perspective on Australian film and cinema. It mostly works, despite appearing schizophrenic at times; there's a real historical feel to it that overtakes Mendelsohn's charismatic performance as the romantic filmmaker. Kathner's most well-known film is "The Glenrowan Affair" (now out on DVD!), which still only played for a week in 1951. More such stories, please!
