After PC Gwen Cooper sees a dead man brought back to life, she sets about investigating. She traces it all to Jack Harkness and Torchwood but when she finally gets there, the Torchwood team have been expecting her. She's amazed with what she sees and learns that Torchwood is a private organization, working outside of government and keeping the world safe from alien beings. She also learns that Jack Harkness is immortal and cannot be killed. She's keen on the solving the murder she saw but Jack doesn't feel that's their business. When Gwen first enters Torchwood headquarters, a severed hand can be seen in a container. This is the Doctor's hand, which was cut off by the Sycorax leader (Doctor Who, "The Christmas Invasion"). There is no 'Captain' rank in the Royal Air Force, The insignia that Jack Harkness bears on his RAF greatcoat is that of a 'Group Captain'.
A Group Captain would never at any period in history be referred to only as 'Captain'. Within the structure of the RAF and on any official level he would always be referred to, and should refer to himself, as either 'Group Captain Harkness' or 'Group Captain Jack Harkness'. See more
