Picking ten artists out of the vast array of talent working in comics today is an impossible task. These artists were chosen based on the uniqueness of their style compared to the “house” style of Marvel and DC, their ability to create character, setting, and plot through their art, and also on the quality of the covers that they’ve done. All of the artists on this list have regular interior work so artists like J.H. Williams, Bryan Lee O’Malley, and Alex Ross can’t be found here (even though Alex Ross’ Justice League is the cover image). Without further ado (and in honor of the late Wizard magazine), here are the top ten hottest current artists in comics in no particular order.

Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool) is an interesting fellow. He breaks the fourth wall here and there, makes film and TV references mid-fight, and just doesn’t seem to care about order or chaos. If he’s got money and pizza, he’s good. The Deadpool video game is set to feature all the quirks that make this character insanely popular with Marvel Comics fans, and lots of gore. However, the plot still escapes us — apparently, it has to do a lot with mutants, since Psylocke and Mr. Sinister have been revealed to appear in the game, which will also have Wolverine, Red Hulk, Domino, and titular character’s former partner Cable.
Psylocke is a mutant who possesses a variety of powers, ranging from precognition to telekinesis, while Mr. Sinister’s an old nemesis of the X-Men. The former was included in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 roster, while the »

Set a few years after the events of Thanos Rising #1, issue #2 picks up with Thanos still in high school but in a much darker, more arrogant frame of mind. His teachers can’t teach him anything he doesn’t know and his supposed quest for knowledge leads to vivisecting an increasingly more advanced range of creatures, starting with lizards, moving on to apes, and finally… his peers!
My problems with the first issue were that Jason Aaron’s approach to Thanos and explaining his origins were quite unoriginal. He’s unloved by his parents and is isolated from others his age because of his heightened Iq, which leads to him becoming an evil-minded loner. That idea is basically continued in this second issue where he tries to find affection from a goth chick who rejects him, enraging him and causing him to become more extreme in his scientific “experiments”. He’s like a homicidal, »

Marvel and DC have long been considered the “Big Two” of comic book publishers, but they had a small presence at this weekend’s Chicago Comics and Entertainment Exhibition (C2E2) compared to companies like Dark Horse, Idw, Thrillbent, and Valiant. Marvel showed up with some interesting announcements, but they were primarily creative team changes and crossover tie-ins, including a new X-Men event celebrating the team’s 50th anniversary. “X-Men: Battle Of The Atom” will cross over into Brian Wood’s X-Men, Brian Michael Bendis’ All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, and Jason Aaron’s Wolverine And The X-Men, following a »

There were several shocking reveals in Marvel X-Men’s panel as well as some general news about upcoming storylines in books from Uncanny Avengers to Deadpool. After talking about the resurrection of Sentry, Grim Reaper, Daken, and Banshee as Horsemen of Death in Uncanny Avengers, writer Rick Remender said he brought these characters back because of their personal connections with the Uncanny Avengers lineup. (Sentry/Thor, Grim Reaper/Rogue, Daken/Wolverine, Banshee/Havok) X-Men editor Jordan White revealed the cover of Uncanny X-Men by artist Chris Bachalo with Magneto strangling Cyclops bringing up the question of what side Magneto is really on. Ramon Perez said that Wolverine and the X-Men 29 will be his last issue on pencils, but his final issue will show the Jean Grey School 50 years in the future with new characters and new takes on old characters. One character will even defect »

At the moment in Marvel Comics we’re currently undergoing a big change. Marvel Now! is a shift in talent and a more focused approach to the core titles that makes Marvel so good. This is all happening with some great results within the pages of the X-titles but additionally the mutants have also thrived since the burden of Avengers vs X-Men has fallen away and we’ve got back to X-family basics. Essentially, what I’m trying to say is, the new X-Men titles have started with some real promise.
The two core titles thus far are All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, with Wolverine and the X-Men struggling to find a place just outside the core. This will soon be added to with the much anticipated all girl team X-Men #1 but time will tell if that’s a core title or a side lined x-title like Uncanny X-Force and the like. »

Disney is set to continue expanding its Marvel empire this year with the arrival of two new Disney Xd animated series - Marvel's Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. - and the network has today announced premiere dates for both shows, which will join Ultimate Spider-Man as part of the Marvel Universe programming block.
Earth's Mightiest Heroes will reunite on May 26th for a one-hour preview of Avengers Assemble, before debuting in a regular slot on Sunday, July 7th. The show has been designed to capitalise on the blockbuster success of last year's feature film, and features a voice cast that includes Marvel regulars Adrian Pasdar (Marvel Anime: Iron Man) and Fred Tatasciore (The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes) - both of whom are also set to feature in this year's straight-to-video CG animated feature Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United.

2013 looks to be a busy year for Marvel's Armored Avenger. As well as Robert Downey Jr.'s latest live-action outing in Iron Man 3, Tony Stark is set to star in the anime-inspired direct-to-video feature Iron Man: Rise of Technovore, as well as teaming up with the Green Goliath for Marvel's first CG-animated offering Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United. Both films were expected to arrive in April, but Marvel Animation Studios has now announced that announced that Iron Man & Hulk: Heroes United will instead hit Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on December 3rd.
Here's the official synopsis:

It’s easy to get lost in the flood of titles that have been coming out since the Marvel Now! relaunch. In the post-Avengers vs. X-Men world there are several books coming out for both teams: Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, All-New X-Men, X-Men Legacy and Wolverine and the X-Men just to name a few. Reading all of these titles can be quite time consuming, and can rack up the total price of your pull list. For me the sleeper hit of the relaunch has always been Uncanny Avengers.
It’s hard to imagine that Charles Xavier is going to stay dead because, well, no one stays dead in the “big two.” Hell, Peter Parker is already going all Obi Wan Kanobi in the first issue of Superior Spider-Man. While the other X-titles tackle a world without Xavier, Uncanny Avengers presents a world much, much worse. »

Like last year’s Top 10 Comics of 2011, quite a few series that were in the Top 10 New Comics of 2011 have migrated over to this list, but to my surprise many of my favourite comics of 2012 were my favourites of 2011. My criteria for selection were based on how quickly I read the comics after picking up my standing order.
1: Uncanny X-Force | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Phil Noto
For the third year running – The Best X-men Series, and still my favourite comic, the inclusion of Phil Noto replacing Opena on art has done nothing to harm this comic, I’ve always been a big Noto fan ? Perfect writing, amazing artwork, it’s a shame it had to end.
2: Secret Avengers | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Matteo Scalera
