'What's New Scooby Doo' left me mixed when first watching it. Rewatching it a few times overtime it has grown on me a good deal. There are some not so good episodes but when the show was good it was pretty fantastic. Season 3 was not as consistent as the previous two seasons, with two of the show's weakest episodes being in it. But it also had a good number of great ones, a few of which show high points.
One of those 'What's New Scooby Doo' high points being "Fright House of a Lighthouse". It gets my vote as the best episode of Season 3 and the best 'What's New Scooby Doo' episode since "Simple Plan and the Invisible Madman". Even on first watch, the creepiness was really felt and the villain and the chase scene/song blew me away, so to me "Fright House of a Lighthouse" was a triumph in showing what the Scooby Doo franchise is all about.
There is so much to love about "Fright House of a Lighthouse". Absolutely love the sinister look of the animation, the dark colour pallette in the creepier scenes really enhancing the atmosphere. The opening scene being an example. The Creepy Keeper is also one of the shows best looking villains. The music is very haunting while also being groovy.
Another standout element is the chase scene and song, which are amazing, among the best of 'What's New Scooby Doo' and the best since "Simple Plan and the Invisible Madman". Not to mention the villain the Creepy Keeper, one of the few villains of the later episodes to be truly frightening in every way. Their reveal is also not obvious.
Which was great considering that some of the solutions in the second half of Season 2 were predictable. The mystery is truly creepy in tone, the opening scene particularly, and is also very energetic with a lot happening. It is not too simple, neither is it too hard to follow. There is some great humour, such as the priceless reaction of Shaggy and Scooby regarding the Creepy Keeper and the Scooby Snacks.
Voice acting is great, particularly Casey Kasem.
Fantastic episode and a show high point. 10/10.
