OK trash gets killed by bad dialogue
11 January 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I saw this one last night, expecting a slightly better than average Sci Fi Channel original like Death Row, which I quite enjoyed. For the first half hour or so this is pretty fun stuff in an inane sort of way and then it pretty much plummets. The dumb but likable enough plot has a soldier being infected by a zombie virus which gives him super strength, regenerative ability and a craving for meat, but he luckily does not become an evil monster. He then teams up with a cook and an attractive bartender to stop the rest of his team from infecting the rest of the world. The film moves at a sprightly pace and gets a great lift from the fine special effects of the KNB team. The zombies look good, there's a measure of fun, trashy sliminess and even splashes of neato gore. Nothing overtly impressive but it does the trick. Also, Dean Cain gives a fun, good humoured performance as the main soldier, whilst Guy Torry makes for a good sidekick in a slightly silly way, and as the bartender, well Susan Ward is at least easy on the eye. The dialogue sinks the film though, dragging it from passable mindlessly fun fodder into boredom and irritation. There are abundant laboured geek friendly references that simply aren't funny, clever or insightful. They pretty much just make the writers seem stupid and the characters seem desperately artificial. There were so many groan making lines, which, coupled with the fact that this is hardly spectacular stuff and was mainly getting by on pluck and likability, combined with its status as a rare non dismal Sci Fi Channel original, cause the film to become deeply uninteresting. As it rolled on, I found myself not caring about it and getting more and more bored as it rolled through the predictable zombie film moves, interspersed with annoying talk. Its a shame, because to begin with I thought this might be a little gem. If you can put up with lame dialogue then this might be a good mindless low calibre zombie adventure for you, I couldn't quite take it. Far from the worst, and it might work for the undemanding on a no brainer basis, but I wasn't convinced.
