The Great Grandparents
Jimmy_the_Gent418 August 2020
Carol's grandma is visiting and the kids try to set her up with Mike's grandpa.

A lesser episode with gimmick casting of Robert Reed and Florence Henderson in old age makeup playing the grandparents. Grandma is a "with it" older lady while Grandpa is a stuffy retired judge. Reed and Henderson seem to be enjoying their roles and it does have a few amusing bits.

MAKE WAY FOR COOL GRAM AND STUFFY GRAMPA!
tcchelsey1 December 2023
Ben Gershman wrote this "mature" episode, who wrote many stories for JULIA, also MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, the list goes on!

This is Robert Reed and Florence Henderson's show all the way, playing Mike and Carol's grandparents --with lots of fakeup makeup, which ain't that bad.

Carol's gramma' is a hipster, while Mike's grampa' is kind of a stick in the mud.

There's magic in the air, though, as both gradually become attracted to each other, and so the story goes with the usual ups and downs. Robert Reed is especially good at playing an old guy, and has the walk, the mannerisms right down. He must have did his homework!

Bit of trivia is also thrown in; Carol's grandma is from Kentucky (complete with southern accent), which was Florence Henderson's home state.

The big question here.... what happened to Carol and Mike's real mom and dad???? They only turned up, briefly, in the very first episode. That was a missed opportunity.

As usual, Alice has the best lines with the old folks!

From SEASON 4 ABC/Paramount dvd box set.
