A nice little film...
planktonrules20 September 2010
Like another one of the DVD extras from "Strangers on a Train", IMDb lists this as being a video game--which it clearly is not! Instead, it consists of interviews with Alfred Hitchcock's daughter and grand-daughters--as well as various homes movies and film clips. All this served to give a behind the scenes look at the real Alfred Hitchcock--the man outside of the movie studios. It was a bit odd seeing pictures of the man smiling and doing various everyday activities. Down deep you know the great director had a life outside film, but seeing it and accepting it aren't exactly the same things! While none of this is exactly 'must-see', it is a nice little film and one worth seeing.

Even better than the Charles Chaplin home movies . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . which appear on the "deluxe" Chaplin DVD releases with NO sound and no guide to the viewer as to who is who (which is particularly confusing in Chaplin's case, since most his wives and lovers were young enough to be daughters or granddaughters, so mixing all these women together can get quite problematic). In this 11 minute plus short, you not only have archival footage of Alfred Hitchcock's wife, Alma Reville, but his only child, daughter Pat Hitchcock O'Connell (who appeared in three of his films, as well) and his three granddaughters, Mary Stone, Tere Carrubba, and Katie Fiala. Sure, there are six surnames attached to a half dozen people, but at least you know in THE HITCHCOCKS ON HITCH who was a spouse and who was a descendant. You see the clan's American retreat in Santa Cruz, CA, as well as the patriarch's Tudor mansion in Bel Aire, near Hollywood. In light of the chief inspector's wife's culinary experiments in FRENZY, it also is intriguing to learn that Alma "did all of her own cooking"!

The Hitchcock's on Hitch (2004)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Alfred Hitchcock's daughter Pat and his granddaughter Mary Stone are interviewed and discuss the personal life of the great director. This is a pretty unique documentary because it really gives you some great detail into what Hitchcock was like when he wasn't working. The daughter and granddaughter discuss vacations, Hitchcock's love of regular food and all of this is backed up by some terrific home video footage. There's another great story about the Hitchcock's coming to America and at first just rented but the story takes a turn when we learn how the director surprised his wife by informing her how he had bought a house. This is a really good documentary because it gives you an insight to what type of person Hitchcock was when the cameras were off. The home video footage is certainly a major plus as we get to see the director having fun off the set at parties and vacations. Fans of the director should really get a kick out of seeing this footage and all of the stories are quite touching as well.
