Inside Emmy Night’s Wild and Glamorous After-Parties

26 August 2014 12:50 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Variety was inside Hollywood’s Emmy afterparties as TV’s finest celebrated their golden night with plenty of champagne, dancing and trophy gazing.

Here’s our party timeline:

8:12 p.m. With its impressive haul of Emmy loot — including a best comedy win for “Modern Family” — the mood is festive and upbeat at Fox’s Emmy night fete at Vibiana, where the spread includes roasted fingerling potatoes and field green salad.

8:34 p.m. And Espresso cheesecake donuts!

8:45 p.m. Malin Akerman shaved her head hours before the Emmys. The result: a stunning look that is applauded by many at the HBO party, including “Orange Is the New Black” star Pablo Schreiber.

9:03 p.m. At Fox, Gabourey Sidibe lounges at the outside “American Horror Story: Coven” table in a gauzy orangey-red dress. “It’s like a big t-shirt,” she said. »

25 August 2014 11:47 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Emmy Awards are on NBC at 5 p.m. Monday, but the celebrations start early. Variety will be on hand inside the best parties around Hollywood as the stars mingle, nibble and toast to TV’s finest. Here’s our party report for Sunday, Aug. 24:

11:55 a.m. ICM Partners’ annual brunch has become a welcome respite from the swirl of nighttime events on Emmy weekend. Waiters with cups of Sangria spiked with apple slices and grapes greeted guests on the steps of Chris Silbermann’s Santa Monica home. The brunch  was fantastic — fresh crepes made on the spot, blintzes, all manner of egg dishes and fruit. There’s a reason we skipped breakfast.

12:05 p.m. No ICM Partners brunch is complete without a chat with “Breaking Bad’s” Vince Gilligan and his rep Mark Gordon. Vince was cheery as usual with a pink shirt to match. He »

Pop Idol: Zoe Birkett, Rik Waller - where are they now?

16 July 2014 9:07 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

We're not going to lie - when we found out that Zoe Birkett was entering the Big Brother house earlier this week, the Digital Spy office got very excited indeed. What a blast from the past - and how much the "little podgy kid from Pop Idol with the dreadlocks" (her words, not ours) has grown up in the last 13 years. But it got us thinking - what happened to the other contestants? We put on our deerstalker, pulled out our magnifying glass and started digging...

Korben, whose real name is Chris Niblett, now seems to be going by the hybrid Korben Niblett. He previously worked at Jemma Kidd Make Up School, but according to his LinkedIn page (oh yes), earlier this year he launched his own company, Evolve Beauty. Not so much of the singing anymore, then...

Rik Waller

Well, for one thing, he's not Rik anymore - it's Richard now! »

Critical Unfairness: Just When Do We Wave the White Flag?

7 July 2014 3:36 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The contradiction in film criticism certainly does not go unnoticed. Sure, there are countless films that are praised and applauded for its excellence in quality and creativity. Unfortunately, the overlooked cinema fare that deserves just as much attention (more so than some of the recognized critically-acclaimed selections on an impressive selection of critics’ and moviegoers’ radars) get lost in the proverbial shuffle. It is simply the professional hazard of the movie industry because not every well-received and standout gem will get its rightful due come major awards season in Hollywood.

Just how many times have we as movie reviewers and/or movie fans become indignant when we realized that the special piece of entertainment we personally and critically cherished came up short and empty in expectations? Again, every smart kid in the classroom cannot get a gold star as we remain a competitive society in the world of celluloid superiority. »

Poll: Your Least Favorite Performances By This Year’s Best Actress Nominees

16 January 2014 2:50 PM, PST | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

The Oscar nominations are in, and if you haven’t glanced at the Best Actress category, you’re in for a star-studded explosion. Collectively, the five chosen actresses have been nominated 38 times for Academy Awards, so any member of this esteemed quintet could run off with the gold.

But every great actor is an entitled to a mediocre performance or two. Here are my least favorite performances by the five nominated actresses of 2014.

Amy Adams: Julie and Julia

I actually appreciate that Julia and Julia was half-about the tribulations of a blogger trying to establish herself. Scaring up pageviews in order to sustain a living is an unusual situation, and I haven’t seen that explored in many movies. But Amy Adams is a pile of quirks and unfunny dialogue in this movie, and I’ve never seen her so flatly perky. You miss Meryl when she’s not »
