Did You Know?

When Daria and Jane enter Mr. O'Neill's classroom, Daria is wearing contacts. When the scene changes to the back of the classroom looking forward at Mr. O'Neill, Daria can be seen in the left row, second from the front. The view of her is from behind and slightly to her right. Her eyeglass frames can just be seen along the side of her face. When the scene changes to Mr. O'Neill's point of view as he is calling on Daria, she is not wearing glasses. See more »

Jane: So now what, eagle eye?
Daria: Well, I can't wear my contacts until I see the doctor again, that's for sure. And if I bang into anyone else at school I'll be arrested for assault. So I guess it's back to the glasses tomorrow.
Jane: Or we go downtown and apply for a seeing eye dog.
Daria: I tell you the truth, this whole thing's got me very confused. I want my glasses back.
Jane: Are you still hung up on that vanity thing?
Daria: That's not it. Everyone already knows I'm vain.
Jane: Oh, yeah, you're one huge narcissist. So if not ...

Once again, in season two we see chinks in Daria's armor.
7 March 2011 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

Daria is being pressured to consider contact lenses. Part of it is practical--she can see better and will be less of a menace on the roads when she drives. Part of it bothers Daria...it COULD mean she's actually trying to fit in and cares about her looks. So, to figure it out, Daria calls Aunt Amy--the only family member she likes and respects. Amy loves the idea--especially since it will cost Helen a fortune! So, reluctantly, Daria gives in and does the contact lenses. Unfortunately, her eyes don't do well with contacts...but she likes the way she feels without the glasses, though she is slow to admit it to others. In fact, she even tries going to school without the lenses or her glasses. Sadly, Daria is vain like any other girl.

This episode, like several others for season two, emphasizes character development and that Daria isn't quite as self-confident as she'd like others to think. I appreciate that, but would have STILL liked a bit more humor in this one. Still, well worth seeing.
