Hortense Jabouliet, jailed sergeant George's mother and lady Deadlock maneuver about the truth concerning Tulkinghorn's murder. Detective Bucket is most interested to find the traces lead to the lady, but switches his accusation from George to Hortense. Meanwhile Richard and the doctor try to settle in their misfortune.
Inspector Bucket receives an anonymous note that says simply "Lade Dedlock Murderess". Jarndyce arranges for George's mother, the Dedlocks housekeeper, Mrs. Rouncewell, to visit her son and she convinces her son to hire a lawyer. Mrs. Rouncewell turns to Lady Dedlock for help as she too has received an anonymous note similar to that sent to Bucket. The Inspector soon identifies the originator and makes a new arrest. Esther fears her mother may have been responsible for Tulkinghorn's murder. Woodcort confides in Richard and admits he is in love with Esther. Richard's health is deteriorating and Ada reveals that they were secretly married.
