Snakes. Nature's quitters

Season 12's Halloween episode, Treehouse of Horror XI, is a notable improvement on THOH X- not up there with the classic THOHs but pretty good nevertheless. In fact, THOHs continued to be good even after the show itself began to decline. This is my latest of my reviews on Halloween and horror-themed movies and TV this October.

The first segment offers the basic idea- surprising it hasn't been attempted before- of Homer dying and becoming a ghost. The jokes are good, including satire on horoscopes, a demonstration of how newspapers can hurt, and dark humour with the end of Mrs. Skinner. The twist at the end is fairly irreverent. This is the best of the episode's three stories.

The second story is also a basic idea- fairy tales come true. Is it appropriate for Halloween? Well, we do get a witch, a troll and Goldilocks' bloody demise. It's also a commentary on the brutality of peasant life, and it's fairly funny. Finally, in the third segment dolphins come onto the land and rise against humans, allowing for a Jaws parody and some real brutality. I've heard fans say they don't like this story, but Matt Groening points it out as a highlight of season 12 in the book The Simpsons Beyond Forever! I like it, too. The segment has a small basis in truth- most of us know dolphins indeed once lived on the land, as the episode states. And we hear Lisa almost swearing when she's bitten- I don't know what would have been funnier, her almost swearing or actually swearing.

Happy Halloween.

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this Halloween special on DVD and with the deleted scenes.

The first story of the special doesn't feel that fresh but still is pretty funny. It has Homer and Marge reading their horoscope just to find bad news: Homer will die and Marge's husband will die. The best part of this story is definitely when we all realize that this horoscope is something to trust in, however my favourite of these bits was the one that eventually was deleted! Every bit is funny but not as when Homer, after finally dying thanks to a broccoli (!), thinks he just tricked death, and in consequence the horoscope, yet again! It goes a little too predictable once Homer get to the gates of heaven, but nevertheless that very last scene is both very funny and perfect for a Halloween special.

The second tale is set in a totally not Halloween-horrifying place: the fairy tales. Yet, and of course, there's horror, and especially for Bart and Lisa since they, and due to the economic problems of their parents, will have to face the place where some time ago their brothers died (and let's not forget Maggie, she will be just waiting the best bidder!). Good stuff, especially this whole tale of the Three Bears… poor, poor Goldilocks! And that "blood under the door" detail, as expected as darn cool and perfect!

The final part is my favourite. It's basically Free Willy with results that will make the liberator, certainly in this case Lisa, regret of making Snorky a free dolphin. Homer screaming "we've wiped out entire species before, we can do it again!" gives you hope that they can beat the s*** out of those apparently innocent but freakin' violent (and hilarious! You have to love Snorky making his pals laugh!) creatures (that are fighting to gain back their original territory), we are with Homer and Bart and the rest but these Hitchcockian dolphins

The intro starts with a reference to The Munsters, the first segment G-G-Ghost D-D- Dad which is a common reference to the Bill Cosby movie Ghost Dad Homer needs to do a good action so he can go to heaven, the second segment Scary Tales Can Come True which is a common reference to the Grimm Brothers fairy tales including Hansel And Gretel after Bart and Lisa go to thr forest finds a witch also known as a laughable and weak villain after Homer throws her to the oven and the final segment called Night Of The Dolphin after a bunch of dolphins invade Springfield and cause chaos.
