Host Joel Hodgson admits this is the only movie featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 that he paid to see in a movie theater.
The last episode of the original series to include a short subject before the main feature; the short itself being A Case of Spring Fever (1940).
Jeff Lieberman, the director of Squirm (1976), hated this episode, wrote an angry letter to the show's crew, and made several jokes at the show's expense in the film's DVD commentary track. In some interviews, Lieberman claimed that the real reason for his discontent was his concern that the decision by MGM to license "Squirm" to "MST3K" would cheapen the film's value. However, there are some interviews where he mentions his dislike for "MST3K" in general, and assumed that the show's writers were convinced that the film was meant to be taken seriously.
