"Country Boys" tells the story of Chris Johnson and Cody Perkins, two teenage boys coming of age in Appalachian Kentucky. Filmed over three years (1999-2001), in the intimate style of "The Farmer's Wife", Sutherland follows them as they navigate the emotional terrain that will change them from boys to men. Written by Erin Anguish
This is an incredible look at the lives of two beautiful boys growing up in rural Arkansas. You grow to love these boys even though they make mistakes like average teenagers. I'm not much of a crier during movies, but this documentary really moved me. I must say that the director did a very fair job of portraying families that weren't necessarily functional, but at the same time were very decent and loving people in their own way. The teachers who run the "David School," are very patient and loving, and the principal (Mitzi,) is one of the best educators I've ever seen portrayed in film. I just wish that all of our educators would be as encouraging as she was (sadly she retired during the film.) I recommend this film to students who are studying psychology, sociology, or future teachers and counselors. Kudos to the director and the participants :)
