Bert's Toxic Masculinity Club
tamsin-parker-262-53892526 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Bert excludes Sophia and Melissa from his secret club, which consists of himself, Ralph and Cedric, by haphazardly trying to scare them with a rumor of a house across the lake being haunted, which he and Ralph plan to use to haze Cedric as part of their "initiation". However, he takes the "girls" for granted. We already know that Melissa and Sophia are outdoorsy types and just as capable as the men, and I daresay even moreso. Ralph, Bert and Cedric aren't typically "manly", but they are victims of toxic masculinity, as shown by Bert getting so tired by the journey that he collapses when a butterfly lands on his rucksack. At the same time, shy and retiring Cedric is physically strong enough to send Bert flying after he inadvertently elbows him in the gut. The pigs are the main antagonists of the episode, but they're only trying to look after Cyril, who is spending time out in the countryside for medical purposes. They pretend to be ghosts to chase the guys away, and abandon them in a cellar. Melissa and Sophia come to save the day, having spotted the moose horn Bert carelessly dropped when he left. The haunted house sequence is the highlight of the episode and has some hilarious wild takes from the guys. The ending is very sweet. The whole thing deftly tears apart toxic masculinity and plays around with gender roles. Cedric is particularly interesting in this context.
