***SPOILERS*** After getting a letter with no return address but $300.00 in cash in it asking him to check out this Joe Case who works at the Barlow Parking Garages Mike Hammer, Darren McGavin, looks up an old friend of his who owns the place Agnes "Babe" Barlow, Helena Nash,_who's known for her ability in swinging a Louisiana slugger 36 once baseball bat and cracking heads with it. As Hammer finds out Joe Case has been missing for the last two days and foul play is suspected in his disappearance. It's not long that Hammer realizes that the missing and later found dead Cage was running a parking ticket scam in the garage where he and his partners were cheating the IRS out of thousands in taxes.

With Hammer getting too close to what's happening he's attacked by these two hoods Carl Pete and Blackie Davis, Johnny Seven & Dale Van Sickel, who as we, and Hammer, soon find out are working for "Babe" Barlow! It's the person who's been giving Hammer information via the US Mail about what's going on at the Barlow Garage who has evidence to the parking ticket scam but Hammer soon finds out who he is and, by slapping him around, gets him to talk.

****SPOILERS**** It's the shocking revelations about who's behind this scam as well as murder, of Joe Case, that really puts the hurt on "Babe" Barlow who's son Roy, Robert Fuller, is the one running it. And even more shocking is the identity of the person who revealed it mechanic Sid Thorpe, Frank Ferguson, who's been suffering abuse from his boss "Babe" Barlow for years and now sees his chance to get even with her. And as things were soon to turn out "Babe" as well as her accuser Thrope were to end up getting a lot more in suffering and heartbreak then they ever bargained for with Roy at the receiving end of it.
