Storyline

Ray Hewitt, a shell-shocked Vietnam Veteran, returns home to find piece of mind when he instead finds himself on another battlefield, the family living room. Although Ray's only solace comes from the 24 hour News Channel, Ray's niece and nephews decide to stand their ground when it comes to their after school programming. Adding to Ray's frustrations are the loud and obnoxious neighbors (the Humphries family) led by their patriarch, Manny, his dim witted son, Jimmy, and their pet rooster. When Ray's two long lost sons from Vietnam show up, Ray has had just about all he can handle. While the forces of small town USA ignite Ray's old trauma and threaten to push him over the edge, the strain of Ray's visit may be just what both families need to realize the importance of one another. Uncle Ray is a great character study
22 March 2008 | by (Los Angeles) – See all my reviews

With an imaginative script and very skilled acting, "Living with Uncle Ray" exudes simplicity and heart. If you want snappy dialogue, pratfalls, and cookie-cutter subplots, look elsewhere. But, if you're in the mood for a substantive character study about the human condition and familial relationships, Uncle Ray deserves your viewership.

Gene Duffy shines in the title role and his performance alone raises my overall rating from a 7 to an 8. His lines aren't plentiful, but he more than compensates with very expressive close-ups and extremely specific physical choices.

The movie is quirky and fun. Even the somber-toned ending isn't immune to the film's unique sense of humor. Laughs permeate at the most unexpected times, and that is what makes the movie a winner. I would definitely watch Uncle Ray again....I just wouldn't want him living with me!
