Music and Lyrics (2007)

A washed up singer is given a couple days to compose a chart-topping hit for an aspiring teen sensation. Though he's never written a decent lyric in his life, he sparks with an offbeat younger woman with a flair for words.

Storyline

Cheery Alex Fletcher lives comfortably in Manhattan off the residuals from his 80's pop success and reprising his hits at school reunions, theme parks, and state fairs. But those gigs are declining, so he jumps at the chance to write a song and record it with reigning teen idol Cora Corman. Trouble is, he's good at melodies but needs a lyricist and has less than a week to finish. Enter Sophie Fisher, subbing for a friend who waters Alex's plants; she's a pretty good poet, quick witted, and could do it, if she'd agree. But there's some sort of shadow over her head that Alex may not be able to charm his way past. And what if they do get a song written, what then? Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Goofs

During Sophie's first visit to Alex' apartment, while she is using the spray bottle on the cactus, she is holding the spray bottle in her right hand with her first two fingers on the "trigger". In the next shot showing her, she has the side of the first pad of her index finger in her mouth. Holding the bottle in this way, she could not have hit the cactus with the inside of her finger. When she returns for the second visit, a bandage is on the second pad of her index finger. See more »

Quotes

Chris Riley: Why do you have a plant lady? Why do you even have plants?
Alex Fletcher: Because, from time to time, ladies accompany me back to the apartment and one of them once mentioned that plants make women comfortable.
Chris Riley: Is that true? Plants make women comfortable? Well, maybe if I had plants I'd still be married.
Alex Fletcher: Yes, I think that was the problem; not Susan's affair and raging nymphomania, but your lack of vegetation.

Lightweight but uplifting comedy
10 February 2007 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I'll admit it, I love this film! OK, the plot line is thinner than paint stripper, the lines more mildly amusing than witty, and the acting isn't going to win any Oscars, BUT...

it's one of those movies that just makes you feel good.

Right from the hilarious opening, showing Hugh's make-believe band "Pop" in their "MTV/VH1" hit video "Pop Goes My Heart", you can't help but smile. Obviously it is especially amusing for those of us who lived through the pop excesses of the 80s, but I have to say the teens in the audience seemed to enjoy it too.

All the songs are pure cheese (and incredibly infectious), which coupled with some amusing lines, a very lovable Hugh Grant, a very cute Drew Barrymore, and fabulous supporting roles from Kristen Johnston and Aasif Mandvi make this movie a great romantic comedy for those of us who actually enjoy a "bit of fluff".
