Skyline review

14 November 2010 3:25 PM, PST | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

There's a certain myopia in breaking into Buckingham Palace just to steal the pots and pans from the kitchen. It may make the heist cost-effective, but isn't it rather missing the point?

Likewise have the Brothers Strause failed once again to understand what it is about 'stealing' that makes Tarantino, Romero and numerous other Hollywood luminaries so brilliant at it in comparison to the ham-fisted larceny on display in Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (2008) and Skyline.

The mind more than boggles at the level of directorial insensitivity that's able to take themes, imagery and scenarios from the likes of Night Of The Living Dead, Cloverfield, The Matrix, District 9, War Of The Worlds and Independence Day and turn it all into an inadequately funded version of Entourage Meets 'V'.

Elaine (Scottie Thompson) and Jarrod (Eric Balfour) are pregnant, though Jarrod doesn't know it as he whisks his girlfriend to the L. »

John Scalzi - Predicting the Box Office for This Year's Holiday Sci-fi and Fantasy Flicks

9 November 2010 9:01 PM, PST | AMC Filmcritic's John Scalzi on Scifi | See recent AMC Filmcritic's John Scalzi on Scifi news »

The official holiday movie season began this last weekend, and for fans of science fiction and fantasy things went pretty well, as the animated sci-fi film Megamind walked off with a $47 million opening and the top slot for the week. What other delights can we expect for the season, and how will they do at the box office? Here are my guesses through the end of the year.Skyline (11/12)The aliens have come, and, if the trailers are to be believed, apparently they see us as tasty, vacuum-able snacks. The film comes across as a mash up of Independence Day and War of the Worlds, and, while it looks like it could be fun in that "Help, the aliens are stomping us into jelly" sort of way, it's directed by the Strause brothers, who directed the murky and entirely un-fun Avpr: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem. Hopefully they've upped their skills since then. »

Exclusive: The Brothers Strause Talk Skyline Part 2

8 November 2010 11:39 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

On November 12, 2010, Visual FX masters Colin and Greg Strause (Avp: Requiem) will unleash their second film, the alien invasion spectacle, Skyline, upon an almost unsuspecting public. For despite an eye-opening panel at this past year’s San Diego Comic-Con and some slight buzz in some of the trades, very little has been mentioned of this momentous film on movie news sites or in magazines. While the story of the film is, by all accounts, a satisfying and engaging tale of survival during the last days of the human race, the story Behind the scenes is what will make Skyline a watershed moment in cinematic history.

When we last left The Strauses, they’d discussed some of the particulars of Skyline’s production (budget, shooting schedule, a bit about its plot), and hinted at some of the technological advances being brought to bear to make their film a significant advancement in movie-making. »

Colin Strause and Liam O'Donnell Interview: Skyline, science-fiction, the studio system and more

8 November 2010 10:26 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

In the run-up to the release of Skyline on Friday, we caught up with co-writer Liam O’Donnell and co-director Colin Strause about the making of the film…

How excited should we be about Skyline? Quite excited, if those trailers are anything to go by. The second film from special effects gurus-turned-filmmakers Colin and Greg Strause (should we mention Avp: Requiem? Maybe not), looks like a far bigger film than its small budget would suggest. And when we caught up with Colin Strause and co-writer Liam O'Donnell, it was hard not to get a little bit more excited.

Despite having hit the town hard the night before, they were full of passion, enthusiasm and reverence for classic sci-fi films of yore. If Skyline is anywhere near as good as their pitch, we could be in for a treat...

It seems like you've done something very different with Skyline: Shooting »

Smashing New Skyline Clip Online

27 October 2010 5:02 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Note the intentional use of a 1998 Godzilla reference. There's a new clip from The Brothers Strause's Skyline online, and, if nothing else, it's a creature feature. We've actually seen the money-shot here before, in the second trailer that went up a while ago. But Moviefone's exclusive 43 seconds expands the scene, giving it some space so the punchline (sudden giant alien foot through car) pays off a little better. And look! It's Turk from Scrubs!Skyline is about La waking up one morning to find gnarly alien ships hovering above it; a blue light infecting and abducting its inhabitants; and, apparently, big monsters on the rampage. Shades of Cloverfield and ID4 and any number of other films, obviously, but Skyline is looking like a beautiful sci-fi spectacle that might at least go some way to atoning for the Brothers' previous AvP: Requiem. It's out in the UK on November 12. »

Exclusive: The Brothers Strause Talk Skyline Part 1

25 October 2010 1:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

These days big budget films are a staple of movie-going fare. Big stars, huge budgets, and giant “event” pictures are given wide release and fill cineplexes around the world. For decades it has been the formula that has fueled what many refer to as “Hollywood.” But times are changing. Technology is seeing to that.

And as the state of the art advances, costs of cameras come down, and with the advent of the High Definition Digital format, the “Hollywood Formula” is being adapted by some very gifted filmmakers, and they are using it to their – and our – advantage.

Enter visual FX wizards and filmmakers, Colin and Greg Strause. Years of working as two of the industry’s most sought after visual FX artists provided them with the opportunity to direct their first film, the highly debated Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. After enduring the promises and betrayals inherent with working in the studio system, »

Exclusive: Writers Liam O'Donnell and Joshua Cordes Talk Skyline and Skyline 2

19 October 2010 11:34 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

In these turbulent economic times, filmmakers - like many business oriented folk - play things pretty close to the vest. They invest thoughtfully and make their moves with a certain amount of secrecy. They do their best to make sure that they have a winner on their hands before they even start thinking about things like sequels or franchises.

It just makes good business sense.

So naturally there was a certain amount of surprise in media circles when filmmakers Colin and Greg Strause (Avp: Requiem) recently announced a sequel to their upcoming film, Skyline. The reasoning behind this consternation is that Skyline is not due for release until November 12, 2010. For a property other than, for example, an established literary series (which has its own built-in audiences), it is a bold and daring move. But with their innovative formula of filmmaking, the brothers are so convinced they have a hit on »
