Bender gets emotional
9 April 2012 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

The second DVD season gets off to a good start when Bender starts getting jealous of the attention Nibbler receives; this increases after they learn that he is five years old and decide to throw a party for him. Bender tries to steal the limelight but no matter what he does the rest of the crew ignore him because Nibbler is doing something cute like wearing a hat. In one last attempt to impress Bender cooks an amazing cake but Nibbler eats it before the crew can even see it. Bender can take no more so flushes Nibbler down the lavatory! Leela is devastated but Bender just doesn't care; at least he doesn't until the Professor fits him with an empathy chip that forces him to experience Leela's emotions. The new caring Bender then flushes himself down the lavatory so he can search the sewers for Nibbler; he is soon joined by Fry and Leela and together the three of them discover the mutants who live in the sewers. These mutants tell a story about a fearsome beast known as El Chupanibre that lives in the sewers and has a ravenous appetite; surely they can't be talking about Nibbler!

I tend to prefer the episodes where the crew go into space and visit other planets but this earthbound story was entertaining. This episode provided a good introduction to the sewer dwellers who will become occasional characters in the series although at this point it is impossible to tell if they were intended to become recurring characters or not. Bender's reaction to the empathy chip was fairly funny although it did get a little repetitive over time. Over all it wasn't a classic episode but was still entertaining and should please fans of the series.
