'School of Rock' Director Takes on 'The One and Only Ivan'

21 July 2014 8:16 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Filmmaker Mike White is in talks with Walt Disney Pictures to write and direct The One and Only Ivan.

We first reported on the project back in April, when Disney was in negotiations to acquire the screen rights for Katherine Applegate's 2011 novel, which won the Newberry Medal. The story follows a silverback gorilla named Ivan, who lives in captivity at a massive shopping center with an elephant named Stella and a stray dog named Bob. While Ivan previously couldn't remember any part of his life after he was brought to this shopping center, he begins to recall vivid memories after a baby elephant arrives. Ivan teams up with Stella and Bob to escape and return this baby elephant back to the wild.

Katherine Applegate based her story on a real life gorilla named Ivan, who spent 27 years in a Washington D.C. shopping mall before being transferred to the Atlanta zoo. »

Walt Disney Pictures is in negotiations with Mike White to write the adaptation of Katherine Applegate’s children’s gorilla story “The One and Only Ivan.”

The book, published by HarperCollins in 2011, centers on the silverback gorilla Ivan, who is in a cage at a shopping center with an elderly elephant named Stella and a stray dog named Bob. When a baby elephant arrives, Ivan regains his memories and plans an escape to protect the new elephant from their abusive owner.

The book, illustrated by Patricia Castelao and written in the voice of Ivan, won the 2013 Newbery Medal. Applegate based the story of a gorilla named Ivan who spent 27 years in a Washington mall before being transferred to an Atlanta zoo.

Allison Shearmur is producing “Ivan.” She’s also producing “Cinderella” for Disney.

White was the co-creator, co-executive producer, writer and actor for HBO’s “Enlightened” during its two-season run. »

The Edge Of Tomorrow soundtrack will be released on Watertower Records. In theaters now, read Jim Batts’ review Here. Earlier this week I spoke with the composer about his latest film soundtrack.

Christophe Beck is behind the score to the Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning film Frozen. The Frozen soundtrack, certified platinum 11 weeks after its release, has sold more than one million copies, and spent five non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Beck returned to the Muppets in Muppets Most Wanted after scoring The Muppets in 2011. He’s also scored the blockbuster Hangover trilogy, Tower Heist, Due Date, Date Night and Pitch Perfect. Cold Comes the Night: a familiar-feeling crime thriller is enlivened by unexpectedly down-to-earth, hardbitten characters weighed down by the mundane weariness of life on the edge [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video]

In a World…: a fresh, funny slice-of-life about a woman in a man’s world, with a smart note about why it matters that women’s voices are heard [my review] [at Amazon Instant Video] Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2: moderately sweet and amusing, but nowhere near as clever or original as the first film [at Amazon Instant Video]

Enough Said: genuine, warm, messy, and human: a wonderfully realistic romance; features one of James Gandolfini’s final performances, and one of his best [at Amazon Instant Video] Fruitvale Station: low-key yet »
