Entertaining two-parter featuring 'friendly enemies', 10 August 2006
6/10
Author: EckyThump from United Kingdom

Whilst this isn't going to change the world or cause you to adopt a different outlook on life, it's a fun way to spend a couple of hours. The three protagonists clearly get on each other's nerves right from the start, and this gives the proceedings a much-needed edge that prevents it from falling into cloying whimsy. Rory McGrath's eleventh-hour rant at his colleagues when he tries (and fails) to make a remark about cooking with crayfish is a joy, right up there with Peter Cook's "I can get jolly CROSS, you know, sometimes!" outburst from the Derek and Clive film. During the journey they meet some wonderful eccentrics (including a vicar who you'd swear was a character actor if he wasn't a real vicar), some fellow river travellers and David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. The scenery and photography are great, and the offbeat chemistry between the performers makes Three Men in a Boat a gently entertaining pleasure. Contains strong language, terrible banjo and ukulele playing and an isolated incident of light-hearted dog abuse.
