It took producer Rick McCallum nearly nine months to obtain permission to shoot in the holy city of Benares, but eventually he did get carte-blanche to shoot everywhere they needed.
"Benares, January 1910" was slated to be screened as the 9th installment of the first season, and was shown as such in Europe and other continents. In the United States, it was pushed back to 15th of the second series.
Hemanth Rao was chosen for the role of Krishnamurti based on the strength of his performances in school plays. To date, this is his sole screen credit as he has since pursued a career in engineering.
In 1999 Lucasfilm announced "Benares, January 1910" to be the first half of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Journey of Radiance (2000), the second half being Peking, March 1910 (1993). This chapter was finally released in October 2007 on disc 7 of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume 1.
