Storyline

During the First World War Alf Stokes and James Twelvetrees, two private soldiers, save the life of officer Teddy Meldrum. He is eternally grateful. In 1927 James is working as the footman in the house of Lord George, Teddy's older brother, and hopes to fill the vacancy created by the recently-departed butler. However Alf, a former butler, and his daughter Ivy, have just lost their jobs as music hall performers. Alf comes to the Meldrum house and, to James's annoyance, is made the new butler thanks to Teddy and some references acquired by blackmail. Ivy gets a job as a maid but Alf keeps their relationship secret and she assumes her mother's maiden name, Teasdale. Written by don @ minifie-1

Alf Stokes and James Twelvetrees are battling on the front line during World War 1. They find a man unconscious, Stokes being the rogue that he is begins to rob the man, taking his watch and the emerald out of his ring, Twelvetrees watches in utter disgust. Stokes plans to take the man to the infirmary in order to escape the danger, however the man is not dead. He is in fact an officer, The Honourable Teddy Meldrum. Some time later when the war is over Twelvetrees is now in the employ of the Meldrum's, the post of Butler comes up, and it is given to Alf Stokes. Naturally Twelvetrees is unhappy, but being the perfect gentleman he accepts it. Stokes brings in his daughter Ivy, who is pursued by Teddy. The characters are set, the family and guest live in luxury, the servants graft below stairs.

This was such a brilliant start to the series, the cast worked beautifully well together. Some very interesting bits beyond the humour, the servants standing by listening to the conversations of the upper classes etc, very well done. It was a time of huge social change.

It is so light and innocent. Cheeky fun. 10/10
