YANCY DERRINGER "The Saga of Lonesome Jackson" 1958

This 1958-59 series is about a card sharp, who returns home to New Orleans three years after the end of the Civil War. The man, Jock Mahoney, finds the city full of Northern carpet bagging types. He is secretly put to work as an undercover man by the city commissioner, Kevin Hagen. Mahoney is to keep Hagen advised on the various low-life types running wild in the city. He does this with the help of his Pawnee bodyguard, X. Brands. The series ran for a total of 34 episodes.

In this episode, the eighth of the series, we have Yancy Derringer, (Jock Mahoney) being sent out by Kevin Hagen to find some phony greenbacks. $50,000 in counterfeit cash has flooded New Orleans in the last few weeks. Any more and the local economy will be devastated.

Mahoney agrees to look into the matter but needs to float a loan from Hagen first. The gaming tables have not been kind of late to Mahoney. Mahoney and his bodyguard, X Brands are soon hitting the clubs and bars looking for bent cash.

At one club they meet a silver prospector in from Nevada. The man, Gene Evans had struck the mother lode and is flashing a roll that would plug a smokestack. Evans is in town looking for a wife to take back to Nevada. Evans, Mahoney and a city slicker type, Bartlett Robinson are soon in a high stakes poker game. Mahoney's current run of bad luck continues and he is soon out. Bartlett is the big winner and is soon up 30 large.

Now Commissioner Hagen shows with several Treasury officials and put the grab on Evans. His cash is found to be counterfeit and a trip to the city jail is in order. Mahoney smells a rat in the cupboard and looks further into the matter.

Needless to say the smell of rats turns out to be correct. Evans has been set up with a cash switch by Bartlett Robinson. Robinson had been a part of a Confederate plan during the late war to flood the North with bogus cash. The proper folks are soon under lock and key and Evans ends up finding a wife.

The episode was played for laughs and does supply several good chuckles. Richard Devon has an excellent bit as a night time hold-up man who gets clobbered several times sticking up the wrong people.
