- In the opening sequence, Ian Nottingham (Eric Etabari) is sitting on a pile of rubble talking to Kenneth Irons' (Anthony Cistaro) reflection in the water about a being of great evil and great shame being around the city and being somewhere he wouldn't be looking. Ian askes if the man could bring him back and Irons says he is already back. Flashback to where Joan of Arc (Yancy Butler) is burned at the stake and you see a man watching in the crowd..flash to the present and you see a man who resembles the witness at Joan of Arc's death walking down the street..elsewhere Sara Pezzini (Yancy Butler) is talking with her partner Danny (Will Yun Lee) while they are driving about him and his wife's attempts to get pregnant. They arrive at the scene of a murder and find the victim hanging from a church outside, it is later discovered that bhe had a crucifix lodged in his throat and was a preist and that the skin under his fingernails was not dead like most skin would be, but indeed alive, hinting he is an undead or something according to the coroner. While she is at the morgue awaiting this info however, a voice beckons her to the drawers in the other room where she finds Iron's body and he opens his eyes and looks at her, talking to her telepathically and then she closes his drawer again. In their conversation he reveals the killer longs for death as much as Irons longs to live again. upon interviewing a fellow clergyman about the preist's death, they find out a man confessed to him and was terrified by him, reffering to him only as death, same as Irons did at the morgue. Pezzini then visits Gabriel (John Hensley) and finds out about many church slayings occuring over the span of hundreds of years, leading Gabriel to think a killer with a passion for history. Upon hearing him saying I love you to someone over the phone, Pezzini begins wishing she had someone to love her. Pezzini goes to lunch with Danny and his wife and after telling them the qualities she wants in a man..motorcycle, puts the seat down, etc..they tell her they are pregnant finally and she is visibly upset and excuses herself to hide in the bathroom only to find a man is already in there. She asks him to hurry and then changes her tune when she sees him. He puts the seat down for her and introduces himself as Daniel Germaine (Jeffrey Donovan) and the moment their hands touch, the Witchblade shows her a vision of the two in a passionate kiss..she nearly forgets she needs the restroom and after some flirting chat from Daniel, she finally closes door. Pezzini and Danny and his wife part ways after leaving restaurant, she sees Daniel approach on a motorcycle and after a surprise kiss to her, much to Nottingham's dismay, he gives her his cell phone and says he'll call her for a ride soon. Daniel then visits Gabriel and after breaking an hourglass owned by Edgar Allen Poe, he buys a set of drums owned by Keith Moon originally to be delivered to Pezzini and Gabriel gets on guard, later calling Sara to see if she is alright and wishes her luck with the man after he hears she knows him. Before Daniel leaves Gabriel's place, he gives him an old coin he says was owned by Cartaphilus, that he should know who it is because of Gabriel's affinity for ancient things and leaves. After Pezzini hangs up with Gabriel, she sees a fiery appration in her bedroom and it fades as fast as it appeared. Daniel then calls her in the morning and asks her out for a date to look at art, have a beer and go to a local bakery, she accepts and they go out. Sara then tells a friend she thinks she is in love with this guy and the drums are delivered to the apartment while she is there, Daniel is outside watching. Elsewhere, Irons convinces Nottingham that he must kill Germaine because their love could be eternal and would interfer with their plans. He convinces Nottingham to exposed Germaine for what he is. That night Daniel arrives at Sara's apartment and they make love, Nottingham is watching outside her window and is visibly disturbed by it. Afterwards Sara and Daniel say they have fallen for one another and Daniel leaves to get wine to celebrate their first night together, promising that she would never have to fear him leaving ever. As Sara watches from her window, Daniel looks up at her and his throat is cut by Nottingham, to which Sara swears revenge. After discovering Daniel is not at the hospital, she goes to hunt Nottingham and Irons possesses her partner Danny and tells her where to find him. On her way, Gabriel tries to mention to her about the coin, but she doesn't listen. When Pezzini gets to the destination, she finds not Nottingham, but Daniel waiting for her and he reveals he has been killed 100 times but never dies. He reveals that he is Cartaphilus, the one who escorted Jesus to Golgotha and was condemned to walk the earth until His return. He tells her that he has done many terrible things and his life an endless cycle of sin and repentence. He asks Sara that if she truly loves him, she will use the Witchblade to kill him and end his suffering. He tells her he killed the preist after he had confessed to him and the man ran out screaming to tell the world his existance..which Daniel could not allow and that he was originally gonna kill those close to her and manipulate her into killing him, but he hadn't counted on falling in love with her. He explains that her killing him with the Witchblade, being made from divine alchemy, is his only chance for redemption, that it is the only thing that can end his hellish life, which she made good briefly, but she doesn't want to kill him. He explains that when he fell in love with her, he felt it so strongly that he envisioned and eternity with her, but once she found out who he was, he decided he couldn't live with the shame of her knowing who he was, the crimes he had done and what he was capable of, saying if she doesn't kill him, others will die. She backs away and the Witchblade comes out, him saying the blade knows the right thing to do and then walks into the blade, stabbing himself and as he lies dying in her arms, he is happy to be dying at last. Sara cries over him as he tells her in his dying breath that he has never loved until he met her and then he is no more, as he is now dead.
