The Wild Wild West during Halloween Month
FloridaFred17 June 2022
It is October, so we get an obligatory Halloween show. Witchcraft, sadism, Satanism, and family curses are all mentioned. The usual special spooky effects occur, including lightning, thunder, and flickering gas lights. A mad scientist who experiments on human beings provides the ultimate evil for this story.

One problem with this episode is Artemus Gordon (actor Ross Martin) appearing as not one, but two separate eccentric characters. Artemus Gordon was noted in the Wild Wild West series for donning character makeup and costumes, and pretending to be a count, a retired colonel, a doctor, or someone else. But to show up twice in the same small hotel, first as a colonel, and then as a French dignitary, and the same clerk does not see past the disguise during Gordon's second appearance? Not likely.

Still, this is a very good episode. Great acting by Jay Robinson as "Dr. Maitland", and even better acting by Sharon Acker as "Lavinia Sedgewick".

Or is it the curse of the smoother fourth season?

This is the perfect example of what the fourt season of this amazing show was. There is evidently far less violence and combat than in the previous ones. But so far, that doesn't bother me that much. And the main curiosity of this story is that there is no real climax, or may we say an anti climax? Not the usual ending and that's not so bad after all, is it?
