Creepiness at Mardi Gras
"Big Scare in the Big Easy" was my first episode of 'What's New Scooby Doo' when first starting to watch the show and it was one of the episodes that stuck out at me as good, due to the villains, the atmosphere and the setting. New Orleans is not a setting seen a lot on Scooby Doo, or at least at this point of the franchise, and likewise with Mardi Gras as an occasion (certainly not as common as Christmas and Halloween). Interest points in themselves.
It's still a great episode and actually is even better now with more to like, not just one of the best episodes of Season 1 (which was mostly a pretty solid season with no disasters) but also among my personal favourite 'What's New Scooby Doo' episodes. The show has grown on me a good deal overtime, after being mixed on it when younger, due to episodes like "Big Scare in the Big Easy". Everything that stood out on first watch are still present and a few other things stand out now too.
Still can't fault the animation, which is great with some truly creepy visuals like at the beginning. The first appearance of the Leland brothers has always given me the creeps. The music meshes harmoniously with the action, with a contemporary groove that is never at odds with the visual style. The intro is still catchy. What really stands out here and the highlight of "Big Scare in the Big Easy" is the chase scene, which is simply brilliant. The song is get up and sing and dance worthy and the scene is filled to the brim with energy, how the waterpark setting is used is truly imagainative too.
The setting is nostalgic and suitably creepy, the waterpark is particularly well utilised thanks to the chase scene. The Leland Brothers ghosts are still very nightmarish, particularly their first appearance. The mystery is a lot of fun, eventful and is filled with atmosphere and energy, with a reasonably high suspect count. It is also remarkably true in spirit to earlier incarnations.
All the gang are strongly characterised, Shaggy and Scooby particularly which is hardly surprising. Their humour is still very amusing, the food jokes are classic Shaggy and Scooby and they shine when in the graveyard. Their chemistry with Daphne is also great, again not surprising considering how well they worked together in the 80s. The reveal is surprising, despite the physicality of one of the perpetrators being very implausibly different to who they're disguised as. The voice acting is great and the supporting characters are not stereotyped.
Concluding, excellent episode once again. 9/10.
