"Sweat Smell of Success" marked the second appearance of Irene Arranga as Mary Johnson, not seen since "Once Upon a Ledge," now working full time editing the school paper The Buchanan Bugle. When Epstein bungles once too often as projectionist he gets reassigned to the paper (shades of "Sweatgate Scandal"), inspired by Carvelli's recommendation of the National Insider, a scandal rag published once a week, their latest headline: "Osmond family cloning six new brothers!" Mary's latest column on Mrs. Kotter, and her description of Woodman as 'warm and wonderful' gets a major rewrite from the cub reporter, along with other juicy though false tales on fellow Sweathogs. Juan's muckraking career is defended by the enterprising Mary Johnson, enthusing about how many copies were sold in the wake of Epstein's tall tales. Once nonsense gives way to sense Juan finds himself back with the projector. The relationship between Mary and Horshack is shown to be affectionate in the opening scene, but would progress in her next appearance in "Come Back, Little Arnold." Both Kotter and Barbarino are again absent.
